vw golf mk 4 1.4s (V plate) - Whining/whirring noise on golf 1.4 - legoman

bought a golf today that seems great but I noticed a strange whirring/whining noise from the front end when gas pedal is down at 50mph or more - when I take foot off the gas the noise disappears. (sadly didn't go over 40 on test drive) This car didn't have much history, so unsure about cambelt (its done 73k) any ideas please? Have I been stuffed?

Very difficult to diagnose without actually hearing it. If it drives OK I wouldn't think its a serious problem. Does it do it in lower gears at the same revs or is it only affected by road speed?

Thanks for your reply, just been out in it again and yes you can hear it faintly at slower speeds and other gears - it seems to peak around the 40 - 50 mph then quietens down as you reach speeds of 60+ Now wondering if it could be transmission. It does drive nicely otherwise. Its definitely road speed and not revs. Many thanks.

Hi, Did you find what the problem was ??

I have a VW Golf mk4 1.6 (Y plate) having same problem ... When it reaches 40+ mph a noise starts to come from the left side of engine ... it feels like something in loose in the engine and making noise due to shaking/ moving ... can't see why its making this noise...

Check the engine undertray is fixed securely. Might be being caught by the wind and flapping around.
