Jaguar Electric Super Car With Jet Engine - john13_bd

Hi all-

Have you seen the Jaguar electric super car? what do you think about this? I saw on the news the other day - although it looks really cool but how people gona charge this car?

Those who mised the news here is the link

As I understand it, the gas turbines run on regular petrol and run at a constant speed to re-charge the Lion Battery pack.

Turbines only spool up once the battery pack has been drained.

I wonder why the gas turbine is being revisited now? Volvo had their ECC gas-turbine / electric hybrid nearly 20 years ago, I wonder why it's again viable?

Nothing against it though, I always fancied a jet car :)

Wasn't this the first attempt at gas turbine power back in the 1950s?

Rover were there before the rest

This subject was actually mentioned during the IOM TT coverage. It is an IOM company that is doing the research on this gas turbine. Apparently, the problem has always been building a gas turbine this small. Remember, this is not driving the car but charging the batteries so it needs to be small, light and efficient. New technology has now allowed units this small to be built commercially.

"Electric" always sounds better than hybrid. In reality it`s another ego gimmick for this German-owned company which still leads to what the UK Govt is allowing this week(check out Greenpeace`s petition)and that is permission for the yanks to start drilling off the UK...nothing learnt from recent disasters across the pond.

If it wasn`t for the stranglehold the oil industry has enjoyed for over a hundred years we would all be sharing incredible motoring technology, not just being shown token prototypes year after year, which none of us can afford anyway.

Indeed, Rover-BRM ran a gas turbine powered by paraffin (Esso Blue) at Le Mans, and Motor road tested a road legal version in 1966. Tickover 35,000 rpm, max power 126bhp at 63,500 rpm. Fuel consumption at 20mph, 15mpg, at 10 mph, 7.5 mpg, because it had to be held on the brakes:) But at 100mph it would achieve around 20mpg.

You have to be careful labelling "electric" as a gimick. Forget all the eco stuff and the range issues, an electric motor has many advantages over a petrol engine. The main one is potential perfomance, an electric motor delivers full torque from 0RPM!
