I am buying a used car this week, I went to see it yesterday and like it. I noticed it has a scuffed bumper and one 3-4 inch scratch on one of the doors and lots of little scratches on the back bumper, I would like to eventually get the body-work restored and wonder if anyone has used the chipsaway guy for North Wales yet and if hes any good. I've seen a mixed bag of reports on the representatives some are poor and some do a professional job. Can anybody help please. Thanks

I was forced into a thorn hedge (thankfully there were no posts in it) by a huge 4 axle trcuk in a narrow lane.

The whole near side of the car had scratches running the full length of the car and from the bottom to window height. a few were quite deep, and the car looked, well, as if it had been dragged through a hedge.

Chips Away did a super job for £100 cash. Afew months on, and the car's fine - no evidence of the horrendous scratches.

That was Chips Away in Wirral - not far from Cymru Gogledd (as the crow flies).

I still have the number somewhere.

You are lucky, the last couple of times I have been to our local chips away branch in Reading they seem to want full bodyshop prices thus elliminating the raison d'etre for their existence.

I can tell you that if it's a man called Steve Taddei of Chipsaway I have had problems even getting him to turn up for fixed appointments at all. I've spoken with him twice, had appointments made with him twice and waited in for him, the first time he didn't turn up at all. I called him and got an answering machine and left a message asking him to call back. He didn't.

I contacted Chipsaway again the following week after being offered a 10% off deal and he called me and had no record of the appointment the previous week but fixed to come this tuesday at 10 am. At 9.45 he called to say that he had looked at his Sat Nav and he lived an hour from me so that would be an hour to get here and an hour to get home and it wasn't worth coming so could I photograph the damage and send an e mail to him and if he could do it he's call me. Then he must have realised that didn't sound good so he said he'd call me anyway with a quote. He said I was ooutside his area but as he lives outside Mold that's about 45 min from here you wonder what the area is

As he was calling me at 9.45 there was no way he could have turned up before 10.45 that day anyway so that would have been another issue.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I've passed my comments on to Chipsaway by the way. If you live near Rhos on Sea there is a garage there that does exactly the same work cheaper and you know where they are. They are up the road from the Promenade behind Pentre Van Sales. I'm going to use them.

Interesting posting but not entirely accurate......

The area I cover is from Penyffordd to Connahs Quay, Inc. Buckley, Hawarden, Broughton and the immediate areas.......

I don't remember speaking to you twice, or making two appointments, but I do remember calling someone who lived an hour away (having put the address into the satnav) to say it was too far away to travel simply for a quotation...... so asked them to send photographs initially so we could assess whether the repair was something we would be able to deal with (The last time I travelled to the Rhyl area for a "dent", the whole panel was caved in....clearly a complete waste of my time in travelling...... hence the reason we now ask for a photograph first before travelling to areas in excess of 15 miles outside our franchise area......)

You clearly think a two hour drive (one and a half hours by your estimation) just to give a quote is feasible. It clearly isn't bearing in mind the time required and fuel costs. Most plumbers would charge £35 or more as a "call out charge"... we offer quotes free of charge and without obligation or pressure to have the work done. That in itself has to come with a sensible expectation of how far we can travel to offer something without charge. Is your sensible expectation an equivalent journey (1.5 hours) from Chester to Birmingham?

Really? How was I going to do that without seeing the damage? That comment does not make any sense whatsoever....

We generally respond to calls and enquiries within one hour, and often within 60 seconds of the website enquiry, prompting the response "that was quick".... Each operator has a franchise area, but may operate outside that area, as indeed we do. However, an hour (even 45 minutes there and back, 1.5 hours) to travel to do a quote that may or may not turn into paid work as a cost to the business would not be a viable use of our time in the long term.

"If you live near Rhos on Sea there is a garage there that does exactly the same work cheaper"....... we didn't give you a quote... so how do you know?

Clearly there are two sides to every story.......

Only took them from last August to this April to reply. Would expect the OP to be sorted now.

Personally I prefer to use local independants rather than franchises, there is a cracking one near us, great jobs and great value plus since its done in his small workshop he does more jobs since he is not driving round all day.
