Brother seeking an economical mid size diesel estate (Mondeo too big). Looking at a nice 08' Saab 9-3 TiD estate with 47,000 miles on offer locally at £9495. Nice car but even cursory research highlights fundamental problems with this engine. Is the 8v 120 bhp engine more reliable or is there a better alternative?

I have just sold one a late 2007 which had 83k miles it had a new gearbox and clutch at 20k and a new clutch at 45k the paint was so thin if you leant on it it scratched ,very cheap plastics inside dashboard rattles more expensive to insure than the equivelent Vectra .mine was the 120 bhp.I was very economical returning 44mpg over mixed driving mainly fast trips across Europe.

Bought it from a lease company for £5.5k and sold last week for 5k to sum up it was a car with no character a few faults like the ignigtion keys falling to pieces a common fault lots of little niggling electrical faults easily sorted but I would never have another .I have bought a BMW 5 series and appears so far to be a really nice car.

I had a 24-hour test drive of one of these a couple of years ago (all credit to Reading Saab for trying) and didn't like it at all: terrible turbo lag, ponderous handling and awful GM flimnsy controls spring to mind.

It can't do anything that a Skoda Octavia estate can do better and more cheaply. Your brother should try one.

We had an Octavia Tdi 110 estate years ago and I can quite honestly say it was one of best cars we have ever owned. However bro will not even consider a Skoda not matter what. Looked at old model Mazda 6 2.0TD today - nice car but their longeitivity seems right up there withthe SAABs! Why do modern cars like the Mondeo and Insignia have to be so very big? We live in a rural area and being able to pull in is fundamental to long term survival? Meanwhile back to the drawing board!

If your brother has that attitude towards Skodas.....well, all I can say is, all credit to you for sparing him the time to help him. I wonder what his annual mileage is - does he need a diesel? Nothing wrong with the petrol Mazda 6, but there are horror stories about the diesels when they get (conveniently for Mazda) just outside the warranty period.

Other estates he could try: VW Golf or Passat, Toyota Avensis, Ford Focus - all of them smaller than the Saab but I think just as roomy.

I had the 150 BHP saloon on an 05 for 3 years. It did 70k miles, almost all A and M road and had a £250 repair in that time for something weeping (I remember not what it was). It was good for tyres, looks (IMO) fantastic and was very comfy and well equipped. It is a decent motorway cruiser and fairly swift.

It also had interior rattles, a fair few of them. I miss bits of the car but the (older 04) Subaru Legacy Estate I have now is a better built car, more engaging to drive and better packaged space wise - even if the MPG of the petrol is almost 20 MPG down on the Saab.

I would consider another Saab, but would be aware of the depreciation (!) and ensure I gave it a thorough test drive to ensure it is screwed together properly.

I'm having huge problems with my VW Passat estate at the moment, really wouldn't recommend anyone buy one.

Check out the X type estate - 2.0 or 2.2 diesel available - mine has been excellent.

Chain cam diesel, very quiet in the cabin, very comfortable, 40+ mpg, lots of toys if you go for SE spec or above and excellent value for money.

I had a new Mondeo as a courtesy car and as you say the new model is vast.

Given the fact that you brother won't entertain the thought of a Skoda, I'm not sure my suggestion will be accepted?! You could try a Kia C'eed SW (estate). Slightly smaller than the likes of a Mondeo/Insignia, 115hp diesel is punchy, no DMF or DPF to go wrong and a 7 year warranty to boot. Has to be worth a look...

Jaguar x type obselete car worth less than its Mondeo twin and for good reason renowned for trouble in its diesel form just about every one suffers Turbo actuator failure at sometime in its life .Ran one for 6 months 2.0 d bought against all advice from dealer friends they were correct a right load of garbage look nice though.

I'm not sure what a turbo actuator is, but if it fails on the X-type doesn't it also fail on the Mondeo? We don't seem to hear many horror stories about Mondeos, or other Fords with this diesel engine.

Beat me to it Avant.

Regardless of car some turbos fail and some don't. I don't read of many failing turbos on the X type forum - EGR valves blocking is more of an issue, as it is with many diesel cars, but these can be cleaned.

Those X type owners who think they have turbo failure often have a split in a pipe which serves the turbo and is an easy and cheap fix.

The turbo needs to be actuated by a controller which is situated directly under the turbo originally it was vacuum operated but to squeeze more power out of the X type they changed to electronics the problem is it bakes itself ,You cannot replace it as a single unit you have to buy the turbo as well making it rather expensive. The sucess or failure of a vehicle is its sales the x type has been a flop withdrawn from the lucrative American market long ago because of warranty claims were far more than the profit on the cars and last year from all markets.Even the Saab was better than the x type but still I think a real eyecatcher in estate form.
