Fixed price servicing - Reentrant

Would you expect a fixed-price service quote to include oil and filters etc if not specifically excluded?

I would expect a fixed price basic service to include oil and filters change.Where is the but:)

I asked because a lot of them don't say - in fact a couple of local main dealers' ads say in the small print "price includes labour and VAT" but don't mention consumables.

To my suspicious mind that suggests oil and filters aren't included. Guess I'll have to phone around.

"Consumables" always makes me smile. I have a picture in my mind of lunchtime pies for the mechanics...

I would ring and ask whats the point of a service if they dont change the oil and filters? When i used to use a independent garage i had a natter with the mechanics or the owner have a look at the place and never had any problems.Used to return to the same garage for years.

My brother fell for the mot and service for £49.00, What service do you get for that price i said not even a oil change just a look around and levels topped up, so just as in the mot a look around.

You are right bigtee be carefull out there they should say mot no service just a check.Like Bill Hicks american comedian now deceased once said marketing what a wasted live live is a roller coaster.:)

I fail to see the point in a £49.99 service when you can get the oil/filter changed -- and stand and watch it be done -- for £25-30 from any fast-fit. That must be the only tangible work done on a cheap "service", and I trust my eyes and ears more than a quick once over for the day-to-day stuff in any case.

I've always worked on the basis of an indie service every 10-12000 miles depending on manufacturer specification, and an oil change at a fast-fit at the 5-6000 mile mark. Works for me. You get a proper eyeball of the underside of the car at this point as well.

I have never belived in fixed price servicing, mainly due to the fact that a service is being carried out to a price & not to what the car needs!

How can you carry out fixed price on one car that may do 1000 miles a year & another that does 30000 in a year !

The all up front type servicing packages I've seen usually include everything which is REQUIRED as part of a service - looking at handbooks this is basic and usually little more than oil and filter change and fluids top ups and a general look over.

RECOMMENDED items which aren't carried out every service are often excluded, this includes items such as pollen filters, air flters, brake fluid changes, valve adjustment, cambelts, coolant changes etc etc.

You can guarantee dealers don't so these packages as a favour!

You find if it sounds to good it is not.Unless family owns a garage.I have never dealt with a garage who would change a cambelt brake fluid change removal of brake pads or shoes coolant etc.Without having a talk what was needed. If you build up a certain trust with a garage they will tell you what needs to be done. These packages take them with a pinch of salt .There are a lot of genuine garages out there but there are always cowboys who try it on.

I think it is up to the owner to make sure that things like brake/transmission fluids, fuel filters, cambelts and the like are replaced periodically. My mechanic always replaces oil/air filters, sparks at every service and runs a flushing oil through the system, and obviously checks the usual bits like brake discs/pads etc, but I found that not even the main dealer replaces things like cambelts unless you specifically ask them.

But then, if I have a good car in the first place and not an old nail (I seem to alternate every few years) I always overservice it, just the way I work, and use independents to compensate for the extra money I am spending!

Same here better overservice or i used to find someone who had a better knowledge than me to help me out,I used to change the oil filters adjusted the tappets replaced brake shoes on my old vw beetles myself.Touch wood i have never broke down anywhere but i suppose that was luck.I have found over the years if you look after anything mechanical it looks after you.A lot of people hope for the best or cant be bothered to learn anything about their car or show interest',I try to explain this to my daugther clever girl mental health nurse ,We all have our problem car i remember when i had the hillman imp nice little car,but that engine.Oh dear i go on a bit must be old age.:) Hope you get sorted primeradriver.
