Toyota Yaris - Toyota Yaris - belt whine at idle? - Sand-Spider

Hi all

I recently bought my girlfriend a second hand Toyota Yaris 1.0 litre. (T reg).

While standing next to the car, I noticed a high pitched whining noise from the engine at idle, not present under acceleration. It's quite a quiet noise, and only really noticeable as the engine is quiet and if you're outside the car. The seller said the car had been standing for a week or so and it was likely to be a noise from one of the belts.

I thought this was probably OK, as the car has just (250 miles ago) had a large service at a main Toyota dealer, and the timing belt and bearings were replaced, along with a few other bits. It's done 61,000 miles.

However, the whine hasn't gone away after a few hundred miles driving. I've had a look at the engine, and all looks OK, but I don't know much about Toyota engines - I drive an old Porsche 944!

Can anyone suggest anything I can do to cure the problem? Or am I just being too fussy and is that a normal noise?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers,

Giles
