Honda CR-V - Selling w/out FSH - Honda CR-V - ant41

Hi,

I hope people can help. I have a 2004 Honda CR-V 2.0 SE Auto which I bought just over 2 years ago from a Honda franchise. It had about 17500 miles on the clock. I am now looking to sell the car but have a lot less than a FSH. The car was serviced just before I bought it but I have not had it done in the last 2 years (I realise my error).

It now has c. 28500 on the clock but when I asked my local Honda dealer (new area of the country from when purchased) the sales manager was v sceptical and all but accused me of doctoring the mileage, and was dismissive of the lack of service history. He the offered me a good £2k under what I expected from even a trade sale. I have the last 3 MOTs (from different garages), which track the mileage, the car has never had any problems and as far as I am concerned it is in good condition.

Does anyone have any recommendations about how I can maximise the value. Will having a full service now make a huge difference or will I spend more than I make? Should I get it serviced at a Honda garage? Are there any other tips out there?

Many thanks

You can't blame the dealer as they would have trouble selling it without FSH. When you buy your next car, unless you buy new won't you yourself want FSH?

Your best bet is to have it serviced - maybe by an independent Honda specialist if you can find one - and sell it privately. Most private buyers - especially people buying a car like a CRV - are clued-up enough to check that it's been serviced.

4 years ago i sold a 6 year old 4x4 with 17000 miles which i had owned from new to a very well known nationwide main dealer.I had kept a full service history(serviced yearly) all mot certs and every bit of documentation the car had ever had so as to verify the cars as new condition but was surprised that the dealer couldnt care less.He was only interested in selling me a new car.A few weeks after i sold the car i got a phone call from the new owner as he was concerned that the car was perhaps to good to be true as the dealer hadnt even bothered to pass the documents on.The new owner was delighted to have his mind put to rest but so much for a full service history.

Get it serviced with a cambelt change then tell me what you want for it.

Thought that engine had a chain-cam.

Thought that engine had a chain-cam.

It has - or at least, Honda refer to it as a "quiet chain".

The correct service intervals (on mileage) for that car are 12,500 and 25,000 miles, so if the mileage is genuine it's not far over. In fact, if if was serviced at 17,500, it hasn't even reached the mileage interval, though it should have been serviced on a time basis.

Thanks for your comments. I have it booked in this week for a service, although don't think it includes a cam-belt or "quiet chain" as standard. I presume they will tell me if it needs replacing (and I am assuming that inevitably there will be something that pops up extra to what is included). I have the last 3 MOTs (2 since we have had it and 1 just before purchase) which track the mileage so have evidence on that front.

Assuming everything is OK I will try and sell privately. Looking at similar models with greater mileage (although funny how every SE model online appears to be a 'Sport' ) I would look to get about £6500.

I ran one of these to 52,000 or so - no requirment for any belt/chain replacement.

It's not usual for chains to be replaced preventatively.

From memory, the model designations were SE, SE Sport, and Executive. The SE had black bumpers, the SE Sport painted, plus sun roof and some other bits I can't recall. Mine was an SE Sport.

You should have no problem selling it privately for far more than a dealer will give you. The CR-V is very popular second hand - shame it's not a manual or I may have bought it for my girlfriend!

Just to book end this string (unless there are any offers out there??), the car was serviced today with no reported problems and the usual checks/changes for the age (oil change, spark plugs etc etc etc). Will get in on Autotrader and other sites/

Thanks
