Astra Mk4 - Driving with roof boxes - vaux21hall

Hi all

I've got a 300 mile trip coming up at the end of august with the mrs and 2 kids, I was just wondering if anyone would consider using either a ratchet strap or a couple of bungee cords over a roof box just for added safety. What do you guys think?

Cheers.

i've recently come back from north Devon almost 800 miles over 1 week...with a roof box fitted to our volvo V40. for the past 2 years i've not bothered with any form of strap. But this year i thought...and looked at what exactly locked the box lid down..hmmm lots of plastic bolts/strips.....so bought a fabric strap just to be extra safe.....i travel up and down the A43 everyday to work and about once every month I see a large pile of clothes by the side of one of the round-a-bouts...and makes me think if its the contents of someones roof box..so for about £8 job done...

I doubt the bungee cords would do much.

However, on a long or high speed journey I do put a luggage strap over the top, figuring that it'll give me time to stop safely if anything does go wrong.

There seeems to be no downside, so for the sake of a few quid it makes me happier.

But would they all fit in the roof box? If not, I'd go for bungees for the kids and ratchet strap for the missus. :-)
