How do you clean the glass on a gas fire? - oilrag

We have a large glass fronted gas fire in one of the downstairs rooms and cleaning the inside of the glass proved difficult, due to the deposits from burning.

Liquid Brasso proved great at cleaning these deposits off - followed by a window cleaning spray.

Be very care what you use (bit late now). I think you'll find it's not glass, possibly quartz crystal?

Don`t know Tom, but i`ve used it for many years and it`s been the only thing I could find that would clean it up.

I use it now and then on the Punto`s headlights too - it makes them look like new - removing that haze you get on the outside. (which I actually thought was on the inside)

I actually clean and restore AGA's for a living but the principle is the same. Use any caustic cleaner. You can even mix up a paste from caustic soda available in the supermarkets and use this. Just be very careful to a...add the powder to water NOT the other way round and b...wear eye and hand protection - it is powerful stuff!

I've always found some kitchen roll effective at removing the carbon from the glass. Soaking the kitchen roll in vinegar for the final polish completes the job.

If the glass is becoming fouled, you're not running it hot enough. Either green wood or closing the draught before the wood has burned off the volatiles. I'd be more concerned about creosote in the vhimney myself.

Sorry-didn't see the word 'gas'. [doh]

I'd be a bit concerned about gas producing soot-a gas flame has to be very rich to yield soot-and that means significant carbon monoxide. Is the fire properly ventilated?
