Thinking about buying an MGF - would love to hear anyone's views on whether this is a wise decision...or not.

Just ensure you have full recovery cover and £1000 in the bank for the headgasket failing. An MX5 makes far more sense.

I would suggest looking at MX-5s as well as MGFs. As a long term MX-5 fan and having looked at MGFs I couldn't be tempted to change my mind. Absolutely no contest in any way. Even forgetting the head gasket, as not all MGFs suffer the problem, the Mazda is a much better car.......... in my opinion at least.

I also would go for an MX-5 every time. If you're looking for an MGF specifically because you don't want an MX-5, look at a BMW Z3 or Z4 (depending on your budget). The handling isn't as sharp as the Mazda - the BMW is more of a grand tourer - but they can come with lovely straight-six engines as in my Z3.

Thanks all, that's really helpful. I didn't realise there was a potential head gasket problem with the MGF so this is good to know. I'll check out the MX-5 and the BMW, sounds like this is my best bet.

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

There are 2 sorts of MGF, those that have blown a head gasket and those that will soon!

A great little car let down by a flawed engine.

And. most of those that have had the head gasget blown and repaired it go again if it was not repaired 100% correctly.

An acquaintance was killed in an MGF last year. Rammed in the drivers door by a stolen A4.

The driver of which ran away while........
