Can a bust offside CV joint cause the car to pull to the right when braking around 50 MPH? Or is this the nearside caliper?

Unlikely, unless the joint is actually breaking up, then it could tend to lock the steering in one position.

If you mean the rubber boot then not in itself but if is been damaged a fair amount of time and allowed debris to enter and allowing the grease to exit then it could have caused damage to the joint.

I had one where I ignored it clicking and eventually grinding for about 6 months until it finally gave up on the motorway in the rush hour. Luckily I was nearing my exit, it was pulling right, left, up and down and all over, not a pleasant experience. They're only about 15 or £20 but can be a pain to fit depending on the car.
