Husband and boys were out all day yesterday doing this. I had the house to myself. Bliss.

you may be jesting but mountain bikkers cause an incredible amount of damage. On the heath land near us there are great swathes of exposed gravel, where the 1-2 inch top soil has eroded away.
Also on a common nearby the sand dunes have literally blown away as a result of walkers and bikers (and yes rabbits).

Have you ever tried to ride a mountainbike over sand dunes? You must have some of the fittest bikers in the UK in your area. Or do you mean motorbikes?

Will confess to never having had the pleasure. I have one of those soft-roaders that I use in town and don't venture into the countryside with :-)

I agree! Those pesky ramblers are a pain in the back side. Walking unecessarily across open country side to achieve what? Nothing but gaining a breath of fresh air.
I look forward to the day the ramblers society achieve their goal and make sure no one else is allowed to use the green lanes of Great Britain. Then when the tracks and bridleways erode away or become overgrown from lack of use they will only have themselves to blame, then what!
Not all off roaders are irresponsible, it is the same with most issues, it is only the minority that 5crew it up for the rest.

I took my 2 year old son to watch his first motorbike trial in the Yorkhsire Dales. His mum, as you did, got a few hours to herself and we had a great time; in his words 'watching bikes go up in the sky - vrmmm vrrmm'

I'm not laughing, you're right it is serious. This is a big issue in Yorkshire and the b*****s are getting in everywhere! They are well organised and inlist high profile names to support their cause. They have no real oposition apart from all users, other than walkers, of green lanes but they are not as organised as the walkers.
I am a member of a motor club which runs a motorcycle trial which has taken place for the past 90 years. However, it is becoming more difficult each year to run this event becasue it runs over a lot of moorland with 'Sites of Specific Interest' SSI's, such as lesser spotted heather pluckers or a rare toad or two. Yes they should be preserved but surely we can all work together and plan the route to avoid these areas and not simply cancel the whole event.
This is an annual event and lasts for 5 hours max. What lasting effect would that have on the environment? I'm sure someone will tell me.

Is this to me? The Landrover they went in belongs to someone at work. A glance out to the car park and it seems to be RHD. Unusually the guy who owns it isn't peering in at the engine - that's where he's usually found. He used to drive these things across Africa, although not this particular one.
