Saab 95 2.2diesel - smoking diesel - loz-1

I have an 04 plate Saab 95 2.2 turbo diesel, that has started to run very rough. it has 55,000 on the clock, and was serviced @50,000. it starts without any problem, and runs well until it gets up to temperature, then it runs very rough, blows too much smoke, and is using too much fuel (down from av. 45 mpg to 38 mpg). When running, it accellerates ok, but when it is held on a steady thottle, you can feel the engine hunting, and it blows a lot of smoke, can anyone help me?

Nothing much you can do yourself I'm afraid. you will have to get the fault codes read. It will be a fuel injection fault of some sort.

It could perhaps have something to do with the service. Unlikely, but sometimes non-original parts might cause this problem, or incorrect oil perhaps? Do any MIL lights appear on the dash?

no lights on dash board, all clear as soon as start up check is complete. I have spoken to WMSS (saab specialist in Birmingham), and they think it could be a split pipe of some sort. i have looked at the air filter, looks clean to me. The car has been faultless for 3000 miles, then it has started playing up.

Just a possibility if your problem is not already sorted. I have a 9-3 1.9 Tid and mine as we speak about to go into the garage with an injector problem. I have injector 4 which is badly over fueling and making the car smoke more than normal and this is also causing a misfire and sometimes hesitation at certain revs.

Sorry 1.9 is a vastly different engine to the 2.2.

The 1.9 is CR, the 2.2 is old fashioned direct shock-injectors.

It is very hard to say what this problem could be at the moment from the info we have. If the car idles okay, but drinks and smokes, it could be EGR valve, or maybe MAF sensor maybe ?

As Roly says, the 2.2 was Saab's first foray into the diesel world - and it's a GM engine with also-ran old school technology: the 1.9 is a FIAT common-rail (JTD / M-Jet) engine. I actually doubt it has an EGR and MAF in the first place! I'd suspect faulty injectors, or, if it has one, the EGR valve stuck becuase it will be completely clogged with soot. MAF (again if it has one) I do not think - MAF's symptoms usually include loss of power and are independent of engine operating temperature.

To me the prime suspect is the catalyzer!

So it's NOT the cat : works OK when cold.

Not fuel injection probably - works when cold.

Problem is when running steady when hot - which is when the EGR valve kicks in..

My first port of call AND CHEAPEST AND EASIEST . is clean EGR valve. Probably blocked.

When cold the CAT is not even in operation yet: it starts working only when fully warm. If it is clogged then the engine will run erratically both under load and with static accelerator pedal, as well as smoke copiously.

EGR is also another suspect, but as said before I doubt it has one at all.
