Peugeot 206SW 2.0 diesel 52 plate - 152,000 miles for £1,200 - Good buy or not? - Cornish Lass

Looking to change my car and just found an ad for a "reduced to clear px" as above. No service history mentioned, although does say Cam Belt done. Also states "sold as seen" so guess no warranty for that price! I know Peugeot Diesels have good reputation, but is this as good a deal as it sounds? Claims book price of £2,475. Planning to go for a look tomorrow morning - what should I be aware of?

Thanks

PS Just found it on the dealers website and it does mentioned service history on there.

Any thoughts for or against would be appreciated.

It's illegal for a dealer to sell "as seen" but the age, mileage and price of the vehicle will come into consideration if a fault occurs.

It`s a lot of miles, Cornish Lass...

I think I would be looking for a much simpler, lower mileage petrol car with less to potentially go wrong.

I mean, if a problem surfaces with the diesel fuel injection system - economically, the car would likely be heading for the breakers.

Good luck with your decision

Agreed, I would steer clear of diesel at that mileage. It is not a simple engine. For that budget, look for something like an old well serviced petrol Yaris. 150000 is a lot for any car!

152,000 isn't high mileage for a VAG! Our 406 is on 250,000 but it is P Reg. We had a Pug 307 2.0 diesel and it was so shocking that after 6 weeks it went back. All manner of electrical problems including the ECU. The x06 range seems better than the x07 but the garage I use have said avoid all Pugs as their electrics are notorious! So it's good for the money provided you've plenty put aside for the electrical issues.

It's a simple binary equation. It's either going to last or demand a repair more than the car is worth,,

So unless you are knowledgeable, the odds are you are wasting your money.

Having just sold my 52 reg Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDI 110 (52k miles and full history)

I'd not recommend a French car with the PSA diesel engine. They are not reliable - the 'experts' can't diagnose faults and these cars can cost you a lot of money unless you're with a breakdown service and have lots of spare money for repairs(believe me I've been there) . Avoid at all costs and buy Japanese instead.
