Volvo C30 - flywheel failure - nick jones

The flywheel on my wife's Volvo C30 2.0D has failed after 21,000 miles. It is being repaired under warranty but what is the likely cause & are the any future implications?

Thanks.

I assume this is a dual mass flywheel, if so, they do that, there are solid flywheel replacements available for some cars, don't know about yours though, if it goes again I would enquire.

Thanks for the info. Yes it is the dual mass flywheel. Once it's fixed the car is being sold!

I'm afraid most cars have them now, at least diesels do and they are a constant cause of trouble, mind you I have heard of some that have done hundreds of thousands of miles, but I'm sticking to '90s cars, much more reliable, cheaper and easier to repair.

In the trade DMFlywheels are known to give in to any unusual use very easily, such as roughly used clutch / caravan towing / harsh off road use and excessive city driving. I dont like them , we never used to have this problem before and like timing belts and sealed for life front wheel bearings, these so called improvements have all become industries in themselves due to high failure rates. 30 years ago, I only changed a handful of wheel bearings a year, but now there a bread n butter job like DMF failures, most large garages have a specific mechanic doing DMFs or wheel bearing changes permanatly to free up the rest of the staff....

dmf are troublesome but on many models if they are replaced by solid flywheels you could end up with vibration problems

As a general rule the duall mass should last a good time, the sort of things that can cause it to fail early are such things that work it beyond the way it was designed, ie if there was a vibration from the engine possibly caused by a faulty injector, low compression, egr fault or if the vehicle is being driven in too high a gear at low vehicle speeds causing it to have to absorb excessive vibrations, setting off in second gear, excessive loading (trailor etc) or any other poor driving style.

Its only a Ford engine you can get a solid flywheel and clutch quite easily.

Its only a Peugeot engine actually.

As used by Ford its a joint venture engine but I take your point.Does not alter the fact a standard flywheel and clutch can be purchased if required.

On the whole DMF last ok look at the starship mileages on some cars with this type of clutch most problems I guess are caused by the driver.

My Volvo C30 2.0D reg 2008 at 37,000 had a dmf failure repaired at my cost. Ouch.

Nothing significant in my driving style to precipitate a failure, I do not tow or abuse the clutch or gears as suggested. Garage response was 1 in a 1000, luck of the draw.

Apparently Volvo has specialist design element which means a Ford garage cannot repair. So not quite a obscure unlikely event as suggested elsewhere in forum then but a recurring Volvo problem?
