toyota carina e pertop p reg 1762 cc - compression & head bolts size - paul1234567

Please can you advise on a couple of problems.

Toyota Carine as described radiator leak and was not noticed immidiately in the dark .

Let it cool down then put water in but not as cool as though , initialy ok when filling then plenty steam.

Anyway when tried to restart found no compresion engine just spin over with no resistance. The timing belt was still in the correct position and the pistons are moving.

My first thoughts were head gasket gone or head or block cracked.

However have removed some components and now ready to remove cylinder head retaining bolts . THIS GAVE AN UNEXPECTED PROBLEM ! As a Japaneses car ,be it made in Englend, I fuly expected them to be a metric size ? but what ?

A 10 socket wil l not fit on and an 11 slips badly ?

Is it a special tool ? It also came as a suprise to see bolt heads of such a smal size for something that would generally take some torking down ? (not looked at that figure yet but presuming quite high ) Also is this model prone to piston ring failure if overheated. Obviously have not seen head gasket yet due to above problem but it causes concern that no compresion virtually at all as any head gasket one has sen gone in past usually has a bit left (compresion) even if only on one or two cylinders ?

please can you advise

paul (paul1234567) thank you

Consult the manual: can even download it online. It would be very strange to be metric in size. Perhaps it was changed before? Perhaps just buy a metric sized socket.

How long did the car run with no coolant. Overheating is obviously badm and 2nd hand engine comes to mind unless you have the skill to take the engine apart!

Thank you for the suggestion . However have a number of metric sockets and a couple of full sets as do various mechanical and electrical type service engineer work for a living. This is why am so supprised at metric socket size not fitting as tried more than one socket and a couple of known good quality ones. It (car) did not overheat that long but perhaps long enough? The vehicle had a very ocasional problem once in a few months of what semed like a sticking or dirty injector, and initially the overheating sounded like this (not see temp gauge that well in dark poor dashboard light ) . Hence put foot down hard a couple of times to see if clear it .

Realised within perhaps two to four minutes geting worse and somethin else wrong on this ocasion. It then cut out whilst urgently looking for and pulling into reasonable parking spot , (heavy traffic poor road) but restarted with some slight effort, and then parked switched off and left to cool within a few yards. However could have got very hot in even three or four minutes as serious radiator leak.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway

ps the standard car manuals , from discount shop (forget the name temporaraliy) something like Haynes or similar) have one from library and not find any mention of size of head bolts in it ?

Any idea where might get info on internet please ?
