Volkswagen Golf V - Mk 5 Golf GT TDI 140BHP Engine Problems!? - Tony1DB

Hello all!

I recently posted a thread with problems on my 52 plate Mondeo TDCI 130 BHP.

As a result of it breaking down again (same fault) on the day my missus went into labour (!!!!!!!), I went and bought a 56 plate (07) Golf GT TDI with 84k on the clock from an auction. It is an ex-company car with full VW service history.

I have had to already change the 'Flap' on the Golf (mechanic said something about exhaust gases), which cost me £350.00.

There are three things that are worrying me about this car and I need your help as I have a newborn baby and I am worried the car is going to breakdown!

1) Occasionally, when I accelerate reasonably gently, the car 'hiccups' once, causing the car to sort of 'kangaroo' if that makes sense (?!).

2) When coming to a stop, the sometimes car feels like it is moving back and forward a couple of inches, as if the engine is not properly secured or like the ABS is trying to work and the brakes are biting and releasing - again, if that makes sense?!

3) Where I work, our driveway goes down a slope, so I often pull away, then put the car into neutral, take my foot off the clutch, then coast down the slope. As soon as I lift off the clutch, the engine makes a really noticeable rattling sound, the engine feels like it is going to stall and the engine revs up and down by about 100 or 200 revs. It stops as soon as I dip the clutch again.

PLEEEEEEASE can anyone tell me if they have experienced the above or know what all/any of the above could be because I need to know whether they are a major problem or not?

Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Tony.

1) sounds like the exhaust-gas recycling (EGR) flap closing, these open usually on the overrun or trailing throttle and shut when the engine is under load. Sounds like it hasn't quite been set up correctly by the garage that did the work.

2) dunno

3) my old Passat PD130 used to do this. I think having the car rolling above 5mph in neutral with zero throttle confuses the ECU a bit, I'm fairly sure it's nothing to worry about

Regarding 2) I had this happen after having one of the driveshaft gaiters renewed.

The ABS sensor had slightly worked its way out of the steering knuckle by just a millimeter or 2.

Its just a push fit & when pushed fully home restored normal braking.

Then my son had the same issue with his Passat.

The ABS sensor had gone slightly high resistance. A new sensor £30 on Ebay again restored normal braking.
