Renault Megane Coupe - Selling car + scammers call me - help needed!!! - Sam Parton

I recently advertised my car for sale on a couple of sites and got inundated with calls and emails from companies offering me interested buyers if I paid them £99 (cardata + vehicle media). Does anyone know if these guys are legitimate as I keep getting calls from smooth talking sales guys who say they have buyers lined up. Does anyone else have this problem or any advice? Should I avoid them as sounds too good to be true....

I used to let them get all the way through their script and then tell them I'd agree, but not pay them until after they'd sold the car to one of their 'buyers'.

Some used to get quite angry.

Much to my dismay, my Dad paid £80 to one of these firms a few years ago, after they assured him they had buyers queueing up for a Golf like his.

He never heard from them again.

Don't fall for it.

Autotrader has a useful (free) feature to deal with these kind of organisations. They don't put your number in the ad, but use a special number which roots out all the known agencies and con artists before routing the call through to your chosen number.

I've used this option on the last 3 cars I've sold, and not had a single call from one of these agencies. I agree though, they are a total pain otherwise.

If they have lots of buyers waiting then they should be prepared to take their commission from their existing clients - the buyers.

Sadly some years ago, I fell for this myself. Cost back then was more in the region of £75 and I realised how stupid I'd been once I'd given them my details. £75 and not a call, UNTIL, around 3 or 4 months later, when I received a call asking whether the car was still for sale. Bizarre, complete scam, and steer well clear.
