Is it just me or is the BMW 635CSi the most under-rated car ever?! It's just drop dead gorgeous and it goes like stink!

Shark Ahoy!

Lovely Car - I was once driven about in one by a Mr Jody Scheckter, who played golf at the same club as my father.
How to make 200kmh look like 100!
The big problem with the car was the b******-size wheels (that's a legit-term, Mark!)- some weird-sized tyre which cost an arm and a leg to replace!
Certainly you can see subtle elements of the 6's design in later BMWs.

IIRC, they were probably 245/40R415's as fitted to some 6's and in my case, the E34 535 sport. It's a fairly uncommon metric fitting and I could only source Michelin "MMX" tyres at around £200 a corner! So one of the first things I did was invest in a set of 8X17 ACSchnitzer 5 spoke alloys and some 235/45ZR17 tyres. All for just a bit more than the cost of 4 OE tyres!

The 6 are lovely cars, the 3.5 straight six engine will last forever if looked after but maintaining them as daily runners now is getting harder and harder now as some parts are no longer in production - again IIRC, the bumpers and side mirrors aren't available. So if you have one, try not to crash it :-)

My Brother runs an M6. Even better than the CSi, absolutely gorgeous and now becoming a classic. Wonder what the new 6 will be like?

Agree on the stunning looks but also with the Count's warning about avoiding the cheapies. I looked at one last year which a young guy was struggling to keep going and it was a rotting heap (daylight visible through the wheel arches from inside the boot) around a nice engine. IIRC a front bumper will set you back £1,500 off the shelf so buy only the best. Might be a bit claustrophobic without a sunroof but then that is prone to leakage! Otherwise I agree it is already a classic that should maintain value.

The Count really is the best motor correspondent on TV by miles.

Now Clarkson has been given his own toy set he has become too self indulgent.

Sorry nothing to do with 6's, lovely cars.

I remember the advert form when I was a kid.

'The average man has 2.2 children and no 635CSi'.

These are my own opinions, and not necessarily those of all Toads.

Sorry guys I couldn't understand what the count was going on about.

The styling is plain ugly with massive front and back overhangs, wheels that are too small and an interior that has dated far to quickly.

Guess I miss the point about classics, but weren't 635s the cars that didn't go around wet corners very well?

My MD used to have one in the late 1980s and I drove it.
Very smooth, but gutless (auto). Fuel consumption 22mpg. He switched to an XJS as it went faster !

Personally I always thought the looks were horrible and the front wheel arches rusted terribly. I saw many second hand with huge holes there. (not so dissimilar to XJS then :-)

Classic looks ? No. Classic performance? No.. Will it be forgotten in 20 years? ..eh yes .. I think.

(QW is undoubtedly the best car presenter tho)

But the M tech on the other hand has and will always be a classic. 290bhp, 0-60 in 6.5 and M suspension. Performance and handling are fantastic, much improved looks (slightly lowered and the badge).

Reliability is far superior to the Jag, and as there were only 524 in the UK, they are quite rare.
