Ford Mondeo III - Squealing noise - waryscat

Apologies if this has posted twice unsure if first attempt was successful.

After driving for about 15 miles my car develops a squealing noise, this gradually gets worse as you continue. When I break or hit a bump it briefly disappears, or if I make a tight\3 point turn it can disappear.

Brakes and discs have been changed to no effect. Wheels are not getting hot after a 25 mile journey. I have asked the garage to check the wheel bearings and that the brakes are not binding and thay say they are not.

I was thinking about getting the calipers stripped, cleaned and rebuilt.

Any ideas on what this may be?

You can do a few easy tests to try and locate it. firstly does it stop when you apply the brakes? in not it probably isn't brake related. Does it do it if you declutch? if so probably something in the transmission. Does it only do when moving? if not its engine related.

Hi there.

Stops when I break, only occurs when moving, continues when declutching.

Figure it has to be something wheel related, either brakes, wheel bearing or possibly a drive shaft. I think it is coming from the front drivers side.

Was wondering if anybody had anything similar and what they did to resolve it.

OK definatly brake related then, the only thing that the drivers side has that the other side hasn't is the centre driveshaft bearing, but I can't see why braking would affect that. Does the pitch of the noise increase with vehicle speed or is it constant?

It tends to come and go at certain speeds but the pitch does not change, volume gets louder the further you travel.

Waryscat, I've had what sounds suspiciously like the same problem with my TDCi 130. The fact that I've had it for nearly a year tells you the source of the problem is far from obvious and a solution...well, two separate garages haven't found one yet.

Mine is like an intermittent chirupping noise which usually starts up while I'm driving along rather than braking, as though something somewhere is rubbing. You can never really predict when it's going to happen, some journeys there's nothing, others it squeals away like a pigeon being throttled. I've had all four discs changed, so many different sets of pads I can't remember, but it while it sometimes stays away for a few days it keeps coming back.

Though it doesn't rise or fall with road speed, it must be something rotational but it's too high frequency to be a bearing and just doesn't sound/feel like a driveshaft or joint.

Garages just scratch their heads at me now because they can find nothing wrong with the car anywhere. I'm going to try a hearing aid specialist next...

Hi MorrisOx, sorry I have not been back for a while.

I also have had disks and brakes all round, and it was ongoing since I had the car around 18 months now, ignored it at first as very intermittent and not that noisy, last 2 months have been terrible.

I have resolved the noise, mostly.

Got fed up and just told the garage to take apart the rear brake caliper, clean it and make sure there was some copaslip on when they put it back together.

They did not actually rebuild the caliper but did give it a thorough clean and apply the copaslip.

Now it has only returned on 2 occasions , once after being forced to brake very heavily(by an idiot in a Jag), it continued until I finished my journey. Came out after work and no noise.

2nd time very quielty ie no where near as bad as previously and only lasted a few seconds. It has been nearly 2 weeks since i had this done.

Conclusion it must have been the brakes all along.

I am taking it on a long journey this weekend so will report back after that.

Hi, i ran a series 3 as a cab for 300k, i had a similar problem for six months it turned out to be the handbrake cable was very slightly sticking on the nearside rear, as the dual circuit breaking works diagonaly it caused the front o/s caliper to drag only a smidge, which as it ran over distance say 60 miles sqeaked and silently cook the grease out of the wheel bearing. After having replaced two bearings in six months i finaly got the loan of a 4 poster and checked both hand brake quadrants on caliper neither was fully returning to their stops the n/s being the worst this causes the fluid pressure on the opposing front caliper not to return fully and keeps the brake pads to close to the disc, a bit like resting your foot on the pedal. anyway i changed the cable £30 problem solved. i to put new discs on it solves it for a bit until the heat throws them out of true again this proves the need for maintaining the correct running clearances when hot

Update, I have done 2 long runs and the noise is back again but not as bad as previously, and it is a little more intermittent.

Interesting about the handbrake I did ask the garage to check this but they advised nothing was amiss, due an MOT so I will ask them to check the handbrake is returning to the correct position at the same time.

Thanks for the tip.

Mine had the same problem around Christmas when the weather was real cold. It turned out that the NS Rear Caliper was seizing intermittently. This apparently is a common problem with the Mondeo's and is also the handbrake cable sticking. Hope this helps.

Thought I would provide an update.

Turns out that it is the back brake caliper sticking, getting the disk hot and making the noise.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
