The median age of a Harley buyer, is now about 45, up from 37 in 1990. Some dealeres say the majority of their customers are over 50.

For now, Harley is as solid as one of its half-ton Electra Glides. Since going public in 1986 the company's earning have grown an average of 37% a year and increased 26.4% last year to $1.43 a share.

Harley's are even the top selling heavyweight motorcycle in Japan.

.......and to think I practically had to beat my broker over the head to buy me some shares.....

"one of its half-ton Electra Glides."

The irreverent might suggest some of theses sales are because if you drop it you can't pick it up and have to buy another one. (I was worried enough with my Yamaha Turbo and that was only 650cc.)

A friend of mine has a Heritage Soft-tail Classic. It's not my cup of tea, but he adores it and good luck to him. He paid around £9000 for it five years ago and I reckon he has spent that much again on polish and wax.

We were at Southend one Easter at a bike gathering when a few isolatedrain drops appeared. I've never seen anyone move so fast, he was short shifting through the gears while still doing his helmet up in the blind panic to get the thing home and into it's nice warm garage before the ultimate Harley disaster struck - Dirt!

Harleys? Why? What's the point of them?

...well their shares have been a nice little earner for the last couple of years for a start....

Those things that overtake each other on race tracks.
Sorry, that statement might not make sense if you're a Formula 1 fan.

I'm not a Formula 1 fan because of the reason you gave....

Bikes should be kept on tracks.. too dangerous on the roads .:-)

For clarification, this was a kneejerk reaction. I don't regard Harleys as motorcycles. Sorry. Still, the share forecast is attractive and could fund the purchase of a proper bike one day.

OK, I'll bite.

Two wheels, engine, seat, handlebars, very draughty.

Why isn't a Harley Davidson a motorcycle?

Excuse me while I duck.

Will someone please tell Toad so we can have his response.

Too busy watching his Butler or flying his Merlin valve I guess.

Hog heaven? - Ian (Cape Town)
There are quite a few around here - unfortunately they are normally ridden by fat middle-aged types with large bellies and thin arms - trying to recapture lost youth methinks.
The 'real' riders pour scorn on these pampered types, and point out that getting 2K miles in 2 years (1.5 first year, 500 second year, then sell at a big loss!) is hardly motorcycling...
A friend of mine warns me: "If you see one tricked up with all the accoutrements - AVOID! He's just got the bike, and can't ride it properly yet!
"Also, the smaller the helmet, the worse the rider will be!"
(some people wear tiny 'helmets' which I wouldn't trust if I were riding a skateboard!)
Growler - I hope the Philipino HoG isn't made up of the same types...

Ian,

You've just described the typical sports bike rider!
Came Across A Nice Little Toad-Annoyer.. - Toad, of Toad Hall.
You should know nothing annoys me!!!!

Nothing wrong with HD's (or the company it seems) but it's always nice to have a pop!!!

Harley Davidson must be doing well, they've recently taken over a large site from a long established Mercedes Benz dealer, almost on my doorstep in Watford.

Lovely showroom, never seen so much chrome in one place before!

Now every weekend we've got loads of "Grandads" riding around at 10mph, showing off. :-)
