Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - Electrics Problem - Kildrummy

I am having an intermittent heater problem with my 1.6 16v Astra Sport which I feel may be related to an electric/electronics fault.

The heater will sometimes start blowing cold air when the engine is hot, then it will blow hot air. I also have occaisional problems when I start the car, it starts no problem but then the engine management icon will come up and the engine will just idle and not respond to the throttle. If I switch it off and try again it usually works fine. I can't help feeling that this is part of the problem that is affecting the heater. Possibly a wrong signal being sent to a heater control valve??

I did have a similar problem with a Ford Puma, which did all kind of random things and the fault was traced to a faulty alternator.

2 seperate faults the heating issue will more than likely be either a sticking thermostat, air in the cooling system (due to water loss) possible headgasket, first check is water level if its low then next thingis to find where its going internal/external leak

second issue will be a litle more complecated, first thing will be a code read and go from there, i would suspect it to be a throttle position code but i am possibly jumping the gun on that , Regards TB

Thank you for that. I will check out the water level, thermostat etc. first then if that doesn't work I will get the car diagnostics checked at my local garage tomorrow.
