Scrapping your car for charity - giveacar

A few months ago I wrote a post about the launch of a car donation service called www.Giveacar.co.uk. You can find the story here. The premise of the service is that we take away any car, whether roadworthy or not, and either sell it or scrap it – donating the proceeds of the cars sale/scrap metal value to charity.

I thought I’d tell you how it’s going so far because at the time quite a few people commented on the story. In three months we’ve gone up to around 10-15 cars per week, and the service has raised almost £10,000 for various charities. Thank you for all your initial comments, I took them all on board and have tried to address them. Now the service is becoming ever more successful and I think we are not far off doing many more cars. It will be interesting to see how much the closure of the scrappage scheme affects our demand. I’m hoping that the new swappage scheme does not become too prominent.

I realise this is a shameless plug but our service is entirely not-for-profit and run at a loss. Now that the service is established and all our processes have been ironed out we are looking at every possible avenue to generate new customers. If you do have a scrap car, or know of anyone that does, we’ll turn it into a donation for the charity of your choice. We pick up cars nationwide. We are also looking for sponsors/celebrity endorsements/pr help etc. Anyone that could help out in this respect would be fantastic.

Anyway, have a look at the site if you haven’t seen it before and any further comments would be much appreciated.

There are several alternatives to Give a Car, we list two which don't deduct a 25% administration fee and will if you want just pay you directly so you can give the money to whichever charity you choose.

One site is run by a Charity Refined Giving, it works it much the same way as Give a Car, but because its a charity they are able to arrange for donations from tax payers to benefit from Gift Aid, which means the charity receives a further 25%. You can find their dedicated car donation site at; www.giftmycar.co.uk

You can still give your money to any charity, together witha few promoted by Gift My Car.

If your car is repairable they sell it on your behalf to the trade, rather than to auction. This reduces the significant costs the auction sites charge for collecting and handling the car.

Gift My Car will tell you how much your car is worth before its collected, so everything is transparent.

They can achieve these significant advantages by working with Metal Monkey Recycling, who don't charge Gift My for using their services. Why would they, its no different from you contacting them directly to arrange for the collection of your car.

The other way of increasing the value of you car donation is to use Car Take Back's charity service, www.charitycar.co.uk. This service won't provide your chosen charity with the additional 25% Gift Aid you get from Gift My Car, but it will save you the 25% administration charge that will be deducted by Give a Car from your kind donation and as the largest collector of scrap cars in the uk, its te very same service as Give A Car uses anyway.

And there's me thinking the motorist is already heavily overtaxed only for the government to spend money on do-gooder causes on our behalf. How much does the director of this charity earn I wonder?

As at least some of the money is going to charity I'll let this stand.
