Which in-car CD players can play MP3 files burnt on to CD so that you can get over 8 hours of music on CD.

They play on my computer, but can any car players cope with them?

Not that such a triviality would affect a car purchase decision, but you never know!

Some Kenwood & Sony multi changers will play .mp3 as will some Alpine units with the latter being dependant on the type of head unit.

My lad's got a Kenwood that plays MP3 CDs in his Porsche, and rates it very highly. I think it cost between £300 and £400 and he got the software package for ripping multiple CDs into MP3 format from PC World. Very easy to use, apparently.

No need to buy software to rip CDs to MP3,there are many for free on the internet.Personally I use MusicMatch and paid a few quid to get the full monty.Burns CD's and MP3'3 and will also rip CD's.Also has a music library, jukebox, etc.Good program.

I use a free version of MusicMatch too. Is it worth paying for the upgrade, Bernie? Is it a one off payment, or a licence?

MP3 player head units under £300.

There are a few cd players on the market that are MP3 compatible. I have a Kenwood head unit that cost me less than £300. I personally use Nero to transfer my files onto CD, but remember that when you are copying into MP3 format, it is a data file and not an audio file. I would not even contemplate purchasing any software burning program as there are many that are freely available. All I will suggest is to buy a CD burner that has a buffer underrun protection device built in as this won't mess up your CD's when your buffer is running low.

Buffer Under-Run Protection, B.U.R.P, best computing acronym yet!

Ian,sorry for the late reply.Yes I beleive it is worth the extra and it is (I am sure) a one off.Its very easy to burn a selection in either normal or MP3 format.I do have Easy CD Creator Platinum as well but it is much more involved than Musicmatch.

My Daughters soon figured out how to download MP3's and burn them to make their personal CD'S.BTW,i have found that " Blubster "is an excellent source for Audio only downloads. The only snag being I use the older version which I find good but the version to download now is the newer version which was a bit "buggy" but I am sure the software geeks are working on it.

If you have Broadband some of the downloads (depending on the other guys connection) can be very fast indeed.

I have recently purchased a Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP3 player at a very good price from the bluespot uk website. You can burn to a CD easily and then use that CD as you would an autochanger scrolling up and down albums and between tracks. The advantage is that you get album and track names displayed. Cheaper and easier than an autochanger. The beat way to play MP3 in the car is through a dedicated machine such as an ipod or similar. Make sure an unit you buy has an aux line in.
P.s Musicmatch isn't that great it messes up music files and makes some simple things difficult. Try ripping two albums of the same name e.g 'greatest Hits' to see the mess. try burning a data MP3 CD then try to print the contents of that CD for a jewel case.

empiredirect.co.uk has a Sony MP3/CD player for £160 or so, including delivery. Of course, at that price, you have to fit it yourself, and you may need an adapter for the facia or wiring. Still tempting though.

For £70 Argos sell a personal CD/MP3 player with car kit (Cigar lighter power, antishock mount and cassette insert). Its not the smartest solution but V Good value for money.
