Which car do you most associate with scumbags or snip ? For me it has to be the Range Rover ' Sport ' ( nothing sporting about such a cumbersome car anyway ) . Was thinking this today when a gold tooth type undertook me at speed, whilst on the mobile..

What's your nomination ?

I try not to stereotype anyone, either by the car they drive or the colour of their teeth.
Or even by the way they try to avoid the swear filter.

successfully avoid the swear filter

But we all stereotype, subconsciously and subliminally , it's the human condition
typical lowlife car - pda
I suppose that's true since I have done exactly that from your original post.

Range rover sport now thats a real nice car i see one and think wow but thats just because im jealous and can't have one unless i live in it, it costs more than what i paid for my house.!

Lets be honest most of these luxury motors are finance to the hilt or company cars my mate a solicitor buys mercs everyone of them has been on finance.!

Whats so wrong with stereotyping? Happens all the time - thats the real world that we all live in.

Old dears drive small, cheap autos.

17 year old lads drive bling corsas

Execs drive audis and bmw

WAGs, drug dealers, footballers and wannabees drive RR sports

We are constantly being stereotyped, wether we like it or not. Anyone use a tesco clubcard? What do you think they do with that data...

typical lowlife car - Pugugly
Plenty of people around that buck the stereotype, lad on the small council estate here drives an 08 Exige - he's a car enthusiast who has always driven nice cars - works hard for living (and not married !) buys nice cars - Guy down the lane - retired but well minted (old money) drives J plate micra and a older model C5. I downshifted from BMW to Honda by way of Skoda (all paid upfront for) - BBC Producer nearby drives a scruffy 01 Focus - older money tend to drive older model Jap and German 5 series or equivalents ....

The lowlife I do know tend to be in early 3 series and the ubiquitous X5 depending on the scale of their dealing ! Happened to pass one of the former the other day, nice to see the crumpled remains of his car on a back lane....

Yes, have to agree that early 3 series is now a lowlife car.

Of course there will always be those do not fit with the stereotype, and of course its easy to quote examples - but its the trend that is important.

Thinking back to the original question - maybe we have got it all wrong by focusing on the make and model of car - its irrelevant.

I would say typical lowlife car is:

Any make or model -
Fitted with bling wheels
Fog lights on
Fitted with skirts and spoilers (aftermarket cheap jobbies)
No MOT
Bald tyres
No insurance
typical lowlife car - BigJohnD
AndytheG summed it up pretty well, though he could have added Lincoln Navigators and anything with a chavplate.

Recent example I've seen. Audi Q7 and Porsche GT3. Both with bling wheels as standard. Looks like some heavies and the boys in blue have taken a serious interest. So I guess their B&B will now be at her majestys pleasure.
Before that again Porsche and Ferrari outside a pub. Leased by family members with a reputation.

on a 300 mile journey the other day i passed a few different convoys of transits towing caravans, and for once paid particular attention to them

out of about 40 transits i got up close and checked not a single one had a valid tax disc

it seems its better than diplomatic immunity these folk have the cops are just too scared to take them on

if you want a stereotype to pick on go for the transits pulling caravans, i bet most of them are over the weight limits too, and so much more

Old Mondoes and Vectras are firm favourites especialty in 2.0 form. These cars can be bought with the money they earn from selling stolen goods in the pub the night before and it dosn't matter about how insurance costs because they are not going to insure them anyway.

Hmmm, I sense a bit of guilt by association. So I drive an old Vectra-class car -- does that make me a lowlife?
No MOT
Bald tyres
No insurance

These three do a pretty good job of defining a lowlife car IMO. I think if someone drives a car with these three they've pretty much defined themselves as someone unfit to lick decent folk's boots.
typical lowlife car - Rattle
Of course not, but if you are going to run a car ilegaly those big cars make a lot of sense. There is no point on running a 1.1 Fiesta as insurance is free anyway as longs as you don't see an APNR camera.

The out of control dog I hit with my last Focus was owned by travellers.

Any chance of claiming from them for the damage to my car?

Don't make me laugh.

Police action limited to making sure all my documents were in order.

Good of them not to charge me with careless driving, actually.

regwte, much as I probably agree with you, I am curious as to how you managed to check the tax discs of 40 Transits as you passed them?

It reflects peoples personalities, the older house people generally liking built to last and hanging on to things for longer, and new estates having brand new shiny cars, furniture etc and would throw their hands up in horror at owning something older than 2 years.

I liked a description of the BMW E34 5 series in a motoring publication. "Well built executive car, languid engines, costly dealer servicing, lack of rear legroom. Now found on meaner streets".

Wonder what the opposite of lowlife is ?

My example of a original 3 series does not mean that they're all run by lowlife - I know plenty of people who drive them, including a Professor of Physics that lives in the village - in fact I would describe him as the complete opposite of lowlife.

VOLVO DRIVERS!!!

Haha i've got it off my chest. I know there's plenty of volvo lovers here and i like the looks of a few older volvos, but wow! ratio of lowlife (crap) drivers in these things is insane!

Their latest marketing catch phrase which boils down to -- "There's more to life than driving, so i CBA[1] paying attention behind the wheel", these guys know their market!

If there's a car window wipering it's way round a roundabout, or indicating in the rain, turning right from the left lane on a roundabout approach, sitting in the middle lane or dawdling in the outside lane... odds on bet it's a volvo these days.

[1] Can't be *asked* :-P

I don't like the very dark tints, but am not bothered at all by the mild ones. I was a bit concerned as SWMBO wanted a silver car and the tints are standard fit, so we found a silver one of the correct spec to inspect, but bought elsewhere.

Round our way the Suburu Imprezza is the top wheels for aspiriational chavs, who like to fit them with huge exhaust tailpapes that make the car sound like a Vauxhall Vectra firing on 3 cylinders and with a blown silencer.
