Years ago (maybe late 1980s) Cqr magazine had an article about a Citroen AX which Lotus (I think) had fitted some noise processor and speakers in, it could be silent (noise cancelling) or sound like a V8 etc. Not sure I've seen this technology outside headphones until now.....

Doubt it as long as people want them. All the luxobarges have a V8 option and the Range Rover is getting a new V8 4.4 Diesel this year. They still do great business in trucks in the States too.

Nothing like a big V8 and now it seems the climate change bods have been fiddling the figures I'll feel less guilty about owning one fairly soon!

People can argue about climate change until the cows come home blue in the mouth, but it still remains an indisputable fact that big engines use more fuel. The supply of fossil fuels is finite and the renewable alternatives will only go part of the way to replacing them as they run low.

I foresee that soon, owning a gas guzzler will just be seen as anti-social because one's using twice as much fuel, which is made from a finite resource, as one needs to.

But one only lives once - and we've always had climate change - burn all the oil and then we will find something else, pehaps the sooner the better, then we will not have to pay the oil producing people that use our money against us.

Canadian tar sands. But it's incredibly energy intensive to remove the oil from this, so it will be expensive. Most of the oil that we find now will be from increasingly difficult areas to extract from, so we will have to wean ourselves off it eventually.

As has been said above - fossil fuel is limited, the less you use the longer it will last.

Try explaining to your children/grandchildren that they won't have affordable cars because YOU used more oil than you needed to - just because YOU wanted to.

The main problem with society these days - all that we care about is ME ME ME

Its not about what fuel I need as far as I'm concered - I'm a petrolhead through and though, I love driving and tend to drive very thirsty cars, generally hard! - whilst its a free country I'll continue to do so! Fuel economy is of no interest to me - big V8s are fantastic and some fantastic V8 powered cars can be gotten very cheaply these days.

If I drive my big old V8 (or V12 come to that) one tenth of the miles someone else drives in their Scrappage Scheme Pacific Rim Puddlejumper who are they to accuse me of being environmentally unfriendly? Burble on, baby...

>but the new "oil" is sand ! would you believe it?<
It's a well-known option. There was an attempt to set up an industry extracting oil from shale on the Somerset coast as long ago as the 1920s. AFAIK the building used is still there, beside the 'beach' car park at Kilve.
