Decided to renew online for the first time. Went online Sunday afternoon, the new disc was delivered this morning (wed). You would not have noticed by the envelope that it was from DVLA, so that's a good thing. I found this easy to do. Good result. Anyone else done it this way. Anyone had any probs.

did one this week but the receipt is part of the tax disc
Same problem as you; didn't recognise the envelope.

i have done this for various cars and scooters over the last few years. My village post office closes next week. Ooops.

I only did mine online to save buying a duplicate mot to use at my local post office,
use it or lose it ,im pleased we still have ours.
What i also found interesting was they check the insurance database at same time.
i had to wait 4 days for the car to show on the mid before i could tax online
the dvla site then said i was gonna get fined dude
even though the car had been sorned by me last month
to put salt in the wound the log book mot and fully stamped service book arrived out of the blue today too

No post office or indeed any shop in my village, but two pubs, wonder why I live here.
Used the online service. Quick painless and disc arrived 3 days later in plain brown envelope. Saved a trip to the nearby town.
Simple.
We had 4 post offices in our town, 3 sub and 1 main. 2 of the subs closed, but car tax was only ever available at the main, and due to the extra influx of people that uses to use the closed ones, the queue is permanently out of the door most days.
I have used the online service now since nearly the day it started, and I find it quick and convenient, and I don't have to stand next to some sweaty individual while waiting to get my car taxed.
Usually find it comes within 3 days, although I did do it once early in the morning and it arrived next day. Brilliant.

Ive used it twice now. It appears to be one of the more efficient government agencies.
I looked at this when it came in, but don't (so far) use it because:
1. as BB said re. local Post Office - use or lose it
2. you have to pay by debit card (credit cards not allowed, presumably due to commission) and I won't expose my current account to on-line risk - too much aggro if it gets scammed and I have to close it - and the government's record on data security leaves plenty of room for improvement.
...and the government's record on data security leaves plenty of room for improvement...
Good point.
Leaving that aside, I used the online service for the first time a couple of years ago and found it worked well.
The CC3 was taxed when I bought it in March, last year, and the renewal arrived a few days ago.
I'll be using the online service again.
I'm sure it works and it's probably fine, but I make a point of not using my debit card on-line, as it puts my current account at risk. I have several credit cards - if one gets compromised, I can close it down with minimum inconvenience.

iffi. i agree, but be reminded the problem lies with the agency's/companies the government use to administer. However that doesn't say a lot when civil servants leave briefcases lyining in the backs of cars.
I was quite impressed and as other posters have said ''its one of the governments more succesful dept. It certainly raises some revenue at £3 per registration to private parking companies.
Yep i think i will use it again.

You can use a credit card but there is a £1.50 charge.
As both road tax and postage can both be very efficiently purchased on-line, what else do you need to keep the PO open for?
what else do you need to keep the PO open for?
Posting things which don't fit in a post box.
There's no charge for a debit card & i think it was 2.5% for a credit card.
In my town we all used the sub post office's and they got closed. Only the main left and its a shadow of what the old main one was and its always packed.

Faulty memory on my part - or did they change it to allow credit cards, but for a fee? The fee may well be worth it for the convenience, but I'm lucky still to have a PO literally round the corner and I like it to stay that way.
Online renewal works for me too - been doing it that way for a few years now.
Saves the hassle of digging out the MOT and Insurance docs etc. Just a few clicks, wait 3-4 days and job done.
The down side of that is, if I need to get my hands on any doco I usually take twice as long to find it! I'm just too disorganised ;-)
........what else do you need to keep the PO open for?
I need it for posting packets and letters which have to be weighed and for posting letters which come into the category of either Large Letter or Packet. tinyurl.com/3787zm

We've been renewing our car tax on-line since September 2004 - the two Mazda's we bought in September 2003, were both involved in the trialling of the on-line renewal service. The tax for the replacement 2006 Corolla and 2007 Mazda were again renewed totally on-line. My 2009 Auris will also be renewed on-line. The whole experience is far better than finding out where my post office is, getting all the documents together ,and then queuing to renew.
just a thought
it's obviously cheaper for HMG to sort it out on line.
IMHO it's part of the plan to reduce the use of the post office netwrok and shut down many more of them.
or am I a tad cynical?
In (I hope quite a few years) many of us will be unable to drive and have to rely on PO and banks. Banks are getting scarce in rural areas. It's currently £2.20 for a single bus fare to town.
many older people are not net savvy so that rules out net banking

yes and more and more bank machines are now charging you £1.50 to get YOUR money out
the online charge was £2.50 for a credit card
this is what i used as i also have online extra password protection i have to fill in before my transaction is completed
zero charge for a debit card , and yes the coop bank asks for an extra check

>>> quite correct ,but ,its easier to see who took what with a credit card online so for £2.50 a pop i think pay the charge

Plus, to encourage online taxation, you stand the chance of winning a SEAT Ibiza.

I'm not, it's Mrs RR's wheels (though I did have one a as tuition car some years back).
And the rear light cluster is as watertight as they come, it's just the ariel that leaks like a drain which reminds me I must get a new seal for it tomorrow.

"Bank" machines or actually machines in private premises (shops, pubs, petrol stations) where the money you are charged goes to the shop/pub/garage owner, not the Bank... I just don't use them, there are plenty of proper Bank ones which don't charge... Don't carry much cash around anyhow...

recently renewed road fund licence not on line but by TELEPHONE, disc came within 24hrs, £2.50 charge for using credit card.
