Is it one of those things they drove up the beaches in WW2 with fancy bodywork and seats?

Be interesting to see how well it is handled when the front wheels touch the slipway in a strong crosswind and the back end goes sideways.

In the Telegraph:

Seems purpose built, tried and tested.

I guess I'll never see BB on a Frog tours DUKW floating down the Thames.

I think the worry with the Stagecoach bus is that it looks top heavy, with a big slab side which as ON points out looks like it could easily get caught be the wind.

The Telegraph picture looks to me like a bus about to sink. No thanks.

It doesn't appear to have been entirely successful.

Mods I'm not sure whether links to The Scotsman are consistent with site policy, please feel free to remove.

That's mentioned in the text of the BBC report as well.

What happens if all the passengers rush over to one side?
Amphibious bus - freddy1
stagecoach will do anything to get out of paying road charging charges ? , actually it did,nt look to steady in the water?

I was on a couple recently in Canada, one in Toronto and one in Ottawa. The guys operating them did mention that all the passengers could in fact go to one side with no problems. cold though, second last week in October.

I've been on the Ottawa one too, fantastic fun and felt perfectly safe at all times, they do look a bit more boat like. Did you get the guy that plays a different song for every sight?

I agree that it doesn't look safe, but actually it doesn't appear to roll much in the BBC clip - pretty steady. But the water is flat.

Car ferries look safe on a calm day, but as we now know, with half an inch of water sloshing about on the deck, they roll over.

Or on one of these!

It's enormously good fun being on one of those when it scoots down the slipway and launches itself into the Albert Dock!

Wiki entry, created yesterday: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amfibus

As probably mentioned in one of the other links, is says the bus might be replacing the Renfrew Ferry, which is scheduled to close on 31 March 2010 as it has become uneconomic to run.

Reminds me of the Burgh Island sea tractor in South Hams, South Devon.

It's like the top deck of an open top bus on stilts....

It had another, successful, trial today.

Couldn't you buy / lease two coaches and a reasonable boat for 700 grand?
Amphibious bus - Badwolf
You could certainly buy two brand new coaches for £400k ish, leaving £300k for a boat.

BTW that's the same trial as seen in the video clip in the first post (the clips are the same), but with a full text report.

It looks a bit small. What about adding a Denby-style Eco-Link Amfibus trailer?

As a Renfrew Ferry replacement, a pedalo would be overkill for most of the trips.
