My Sky box kindly recorded this film - excellent period comedy drama (1960s) with some motors in it that were a common sight for people of a certain age - over egged car chase involving a Wolseley 6/90 Police car and an Aston Martin DB5 ( I think) driven energetically by the Peter Sellers character. Worth watching if only for the roadside architecture. Apparently out on DVD !

In one scene as part of the plot level crossing gates are closed by the mob using a large wheel in the signal box - I actiually forgotten I'd seen this sort of stuff as a kid !

A cracking miserable afternoon's viewing - funnily enough one scene had me thinking of Hugo and his Disco - a Constable searching the boot of the mob's Wolseley and finding a siren and radio aerial !

Cast iron gate wheels still exist PU.

Local halt to me in West Sussex still has proper crossing with gates and inside the crossing can be seen the keeper and the same huge wheel to open the gates which I recall from my youth 50 plus years ago where my best friends dad was a crossing keeper on the old LNER line and we used to help him out by operating the signal levers.

There was one which locked the gate in position which had to be released and then the wheel was turned as fast as we could......

Motoring Link - The gates would be rapidly closed against her if he spotted the car of the local lady of the manor who he despised ... whether a train was coming or not.

Another childhood memory re-kindled the spinning wheel - how I wanted to be that signal man opening and closing gates.....

From memory there is still one in the signal box at Ketton crossing. (A line that runs from peterborough to northampton)

I think there's still a wheel-operated level crossing gate at Blue Anchor station on the West Somerset Railway.

Oh dear PU. Now you're retired you've nothing better to do than watch daytime TV.

You'll be tuning in to Jeremy Kyle next.

It can be very entertaining at times - although never as good as Jerry Springer. ;>)

Brilliant indeed. Sellers at his best before embarking on the years of American films that rarely used his talents properly.

Littlehaven for a tenner. One of the reasons why I like the Arun Valley line - still has proper railway architecture including signalboxes and even the odd semaphore signal south of Billingshurst...

Absolutely Correct Paul.....

Its close to the helicopter abode which was picked because of its proximity but not close enough to be overly disturbed by the train noises.

Much local complaint to rail operators and local paper , MP's etc when the latest trains were ordered by Railway Elf and Safety to sound their horns at deafening decibels every time they approached the two local foot crossings either side of the Littlehaven halt. Then they installed warning sirens as well in what is a very residential area. Eight trains an hour from five in the morning to after midnight got a bit much.

It has toned down a bit now but if the wind is in the wrong direction we can still hear them when we're in the garden.

So where are you ?

Outskirts of Angmering, so close enough to Arundel to make travel from there a better proposition than going round via Hove. Plus the scenery is infinitely preferable.

Mrs B's aunt lives just next to Angmering station crossing and she got very, very bored with these foghorn blasts from the Electrostars passing through. Couldn't understand the need for it there, either. Any of the local twerps minded to trespass on the line when they get bored of vandalising parked cars (motoring link) aren't going to be discouraged by loud train horns.
