Saw a new Discovery this morning. On trade plates so probably on his way to the factory.

Words fail me . . .

Try and find some to describe what you saw !

I saw one of these the other day and the new factory fit front lights look like some chav add on from a generic motoring store.

Not seen one, but I have seen the tow asist function.

If you have the LR tow bar option, it connects to the rear view camera, and displays a line to guide your tow bar to the tow hitch of the caravan when you reverse.

now that is neat.

The current Land Rovers look like the old models with chavtastic customisation. The new discovery 3 facelift (4?) is hideous. The grilles across the range are made from formers that plasterers use to form corners of walls. The last time a car maker did this it was MG Rover, and they didn't last long after that.

For bad LED lights, I think one needs to look at rear lights rather than front ones. On both the current Range Rover and on the Mk 5 VW Golf, when the brake lights are on it's difficult to see the indicators working. Also the VW Golf plus, which I think looks nice, its appearance is ruined at the rear by the two big round silver LED clusters that look like 4 old-fashioned round headlights from a distance.

Agreed -- and on the VW it's down to them being co-located IIRC.

Form over function.

Audi daytime running lights / sidelights started this trend iirc? I think they look pretty tacky, tbh

At least the Audi lights follow the form of the headlights - I think the Porsche 911 straight line lights under the round headlights look like a cheap afterthought...

I entirely agree with your opinion of the aesthetics of the Discovery 4 LED DRLs, however I can put words to my impression of them - they look like Harry Potter's spectacles.

There are some pretty tacky looking LED DRLs on Audi 4x4s too but LR takes the biscuit with the Discovery 4 imho.

I notice that Jaguar has started putting them on XFs too, not so bad aesthetically as straight LED strips at bumper level - similar to Mercedes' new E Class I think ?

Harry Potters spectacles were round last time I looked!

As the LR Discovery 4's DRLs appeared (to me) when in the rear view mirror in the M4 some weeks ago - note they surround about 2/3rds of the round central driving lights as well as the squared off outer sections.

The overall look is of round spectacles with L shaped arms on either side, it's only an opinion of course.

It will be interesting to see what the manufacturers come up with for the cheapo runabouts when DRL's become mandatory, they don't seem to have pleased many with the up market models.

These lights (lines of LEDs) are the most chavvy thing ever seen on prestige models... I hate them.

Chav values centre around the acquisition of bling and status symbols. Vulgarity is to be admired.

These are the sentiments which "prestige" manufacturers have played up to in increasing volumes over recent years. Look at old, workaday Mercs versus their current crop of Blingwagens. Old workaday Land Rovers produced for the farming community versus the current footballers' transports which they produce. What's new?

Views on the forum seem to become more reactionary by the day. Different sort of lights? Its the end of the world as we know it! Don't worry, in a year or two you will not even notice them.

Hmm, there was a recent discussion of DRLs where a number of posters complained that they dazzled, personally I like then - LED ones included, they look particularly good on an A4 / A5 too IMHO. But on the facelifted LRs I would contend that their styling is too contrived, inelegant even - which has nothing to do with their purpose either and I'd contend that they'll still look contrived in a couple of years time.

DRLs

I am reliably informed by my teenage son that the correct terminology for these is 'fairy lights'.
