They are very tight as the cosequences of them coming loose can be considerable. They normally have a right hand thread, you will probably need something like a four foot bar on the socket. There is a quick and easy way if you are brave, using a bar long enough to reach the ground , engage the socket with the bar facing farwards touching the ground and just blip the starter, that should unscrew it. When you replace it put some locktite on the bolt.
