Is it me, or is there a huge number of roadworks on the motorway network at the moment?

Most of them are 50 mph, no workers, and enforced by average speed cameras. They all seem to be for totally pointless schemes like sign replacements and changing the central barrier to concrete. Drove me nuts last week after I came across what seemed like the 30th set.

As a side note, I didn't see a single police car and this was nicely evidenced by the surprising number of people cruising in excess of a ton.

Yes there does seem to be a lot of M/way roadworks just now. A stretch I use regularly includes M6 J16 down to J20 on the M5 and back. Selective perception probably but it feels like most of it is restricted to 50 mph. Very boring.

Still get a lot of "weaver birds" though. Desperately seeking the lane doing 2mph faster than the others. Remarkable how difficult some seem to find it to maintain a steady pace and a safe gap even under such restricted circumstances.

i do j31 m6 down to the first junction on the m5 , several mornings a week , arriving in smethick at 07.00am , yes there does seem to be more and more roadworks , and its annoying when no one is working , evidently they finish at 06.00?

i "believe" that this section of the m6 is going to be a "self managed" motorway , with cameras checking your speed over a greater distance

loading the van with a couple of pallets of beer from a large cash n carry , stopping on the main road , getting a bacon butty and a coffe , then fighting my way back up that stupid motorway , driving fast in a sprinter , a 50 zone gives me time to have a fag!

It's probably all surveys and assessments rather than real work, a bit like the rest of British 'industry'.

With the current outlook for government spending cuts in a year or two you will be looking back nostalgically at the time when the government had the money to repair roads and even occasionally build new ones.

Isn't this behaviour common at this time of year, as public authorities race to spend their budget before end March?

I heard the other day of a LA who is issuing a laptop to every child minder, but the work HAS to be done by end March. I'm sure they have a very good need...

It's a nightmare for us at the moment. Virtually the whole of the hard shoulder from J5 of the M5 to J16 of the M6 closed off. (With the odd gap in between). Impossible to pull anything! And it's in both directions as well...excellent planning.

It took me 4 hours to drive 130 miles when I went to visit family last week. Artificial congestion caused by the constant 50 mph limits. wish I'd invested in firms that manufacture cones!
