Hi guys, i'm looking to get another car in the not so distant future and i just have a thing for the really sporty looking coupe's at the moment, i was going to buy my brothers toyota Celica 2.0 GT but i decided against it for a number of reasons...but i was just wondering if you had any suggestions as to what to look for in and around the price range i mention, another i was looking at was the Hyundia coupe 2.0 52 plate onwards because of the newer shape and i probably could pick a 52 plate up for around 3 k....so any other Coupe's perhaps i might be overlooking that are good reliable cars in the main???

Haha i was going through the same, i'm really picky so this is all i managed to get on my list. They should all be top notch cars though (i hope!):

Toyota Celica 190
Honda Integra Type-R '98 on (seems the best bet, difficult to find at 3k though)
Ford Focus (can't remember the name of the sporty model with the torsen diff)

The Hyundai's bullet-proof; I still have a 2001 model blocking up my drive, tried selling it here and on e-bay but since it was near Christmas got no joy.

Ignore the badge snobs and go for one, you won't be disappointed.

52 plate should just be within your target price; make sure the front wheel bearings and brake discs are good, these are the only weak points. Not unreliable but expensive to fix. I'd also go for the 2.0 model.

Yeah i love Hyundai's, i think the coupe from 52 plate onwards looks far better than the older style though.

Another vote for Hundai coupe.

SM if you really are interested in newer shape Hyundai coupe, it might be worth finding out if the discs are fitted from inside the hub as in the previous model (HM's i believe).

It's a dickens of a job and costs a lot even if you do the donkey work yourself as all 4 front wheelbearings will be destroyed during strip out, i know as i helped my lad do his F2 which he regretted selling, he could not break it and that speaks volumes as he breaks every car he owns.

Maybe if you researched it you would post back...i'm sure many of us would like to know, does that sound a bit cheeky? i hope not..;)

Had a quick research GB, couldn't find a thing about the discs...to be honest there weren't many bad things said about it at all, most reviews are pretty complimentry, just some do say it's not for the snob brigade thats all...but i'm glad it has that reputation amoungst a few people because if it we're as popular as lets say a toyota celica of the same age, i'd never be able to pick a decent one up for under 3k...which i'm pretty sure i can from what i've seen!...i just think they're lovely cars, i've got a Lantra at the moment and i love it, and that was based half on the coupe.

If you can find one a Reliant Scimitar
GT coupe (not the GTE) mid to late
60s so a classic and no road tax.
Glass fibre body, strong separate chassis
Ford V6 very strong and can be
breathed on. Flourishing club too.
Classic everyday motoring.
I miss mine.

Alfa's are stunningly beautiful cars and i could pick up a fantastic coupe for the budget i have in mind but i've heard the are mechanical very poor, head gasket problems the lot!! and having owner 3 rovers in the past with head gasket failures i really don't want another with an Alfa but like i say beautiful cars, i just wish they were sound engine wise!

No it's one of those things that you find out the hard way as we did, turns a £60 new discs job into a £300 to 500 major operation depending who does the donkey work (bearings are expensive and heavy press reqd), i believe your Lantra has similar disc fitmets.

Hyndai's first came to my attention with early Lantra and Accents the rental companies had fleets of them and good simple solid motors they were too, i took truckloads of Lantra's to various garages after defleet i liked them a lot still do.

I think the coupe you are thinking of is one of the prettiest modern cars around.

Should be able to find a tidy Porsche 944 for that. Bit more interesting than an econobox with a different shell slapped on top!

Slightly offbeat - the best Audi 90-shape coupe you can buy - £3k is not enough for an S2 worth owning, but will get you a tidy 2.6.

Classy, understated, solid as a rock.

And plenty of understeer to keep you amused on a dark winter's night. Why do Audi insist on putting the engine in the wrong place?

I owned a 1998 2.0 Hyundai coupe. loved it. Came with leather, aircon, cruise, sunroof, all the usual electrics etc. The back seats were good and can fit 2 adults in quite easily.

However the parts are expensive. I had to have all the discs and pads replaced on it. I done a lot of searching and got the price quite down. I ended up buying the parts myself and got a garage to replace them - came in at just under £300 all in. The back discs and pads you can change normally but the fronts are a pain. you have to take the hub off to get the disc off and the bearings basically fall out. You will have to get a garage to put them back in with the hydraulic press. I had to have a few bushes replaced to - again these are expensive (compared to the likes of ford etc..)

Apart from the expensive parts they are great to own and apart from the brakes and bushes i never had to pay out anything else. They can do quite high mileage too - I have seen some with over 150k on the clock.

I would definitly buy one again but i would spend a lot of time searching for a well kept one with lots of history.

Rummage around for an extra £1500 and have a think about a Mazda RX8.

If you can stomach the road tax on them.............

We've had 5 years excellent service and enjoyment from the Prelude 2.2 Vtec and they're cheap as chips now. A month ago one of the well-known UK classic car dealers had a very low mileage one-owner example up for just under 5k sterling. After debating whether to pension ours off and whether I wanted another 5 years of sitting close to the road I decided to pay his asking price - but I was beaten to it.

Volvo C70?

Im currently on the look out for a good one in the same price braket as you and you get a lot of car for your money. T5 is monsterously quick, but the 2.4 T is more than adequeate.

Saab 9-3 Aero?
