I dont mean just motor oil, will applying some good quality grease prevent cracking and splitting?

Any form a grease attracts dust/grip to stick to them. If you clean them then apply Amoral and wipe off it does appear to keep them fresh. Regards Peter

Silicone grease may help, very unlikely to make any real difference though.

This is a very good idea - but needs careful thought and execution.

If you take a careful look at a failed CV joint boot, the material nearly always cracks from the outside, usually at the bottom of a pleat. Failures generally do not occur from the inside because the grease keeps the "rubber" soft.

These boots are not rubber of course, but usually a type of neoprene or hytrel which is fully oil and grease resistant.

My VAG car is notorious for splitting CV joint boots, so I've done a bit of experimentation.

Mineral grease is out because it will simply be washed off. Silicone grease is a much better bet but has the disadvantage of being sticky enough to attract road dust and grit. If left adhereing to the gaitor pleats, the boot material will be ground away as the car is manoeuvered on full lock.

I'm still working on this, but my scheme is to apply a small dollop of silicone grease to a gloved hand and work it into the boot - rotate the driveshaft as you do it. This will make the boot visibly sticky. Run the vehicle for a couple of days, then take a dry cloth and remove all visible grease.

This leaves the boot non sticky and noticably softer and more pliable. Done when the car is serviced, the cost in time is very small. So far, no problems.

I'll report back if there is any general interest.

Thanks for the tips. I will look at the silicone grease. Ive just given the old gal and treat underneath to a spray off and dry then underseal floor plan and all suspension arms links, subframe and wishbones, greased the sump and although the boots look I though a bit of preventative maintenance on them.

Please do so with a specific thread sometime if you would 659, there's still a good few of us prefer preventing to repairing.

It's not something i've concerned meself with before having mostly RWD's, but the pick up has independent front drive shafts and stripping those for boot replacement looks..interesting.
