Runny car polish ~ a cautionary tale - L'escargot
I recently bought a 500 ml bottle of car polish. When I came to use it I found it was very runny, and much runnier than similar bottles I'd previously bought. I informed the manufacturer who asked me to send them a sample in the sample bottle they provided. I've just received a reply from them which said that the product was contaminated. They didn't say what it was contaminated with, but I suspect that it was water and also I suspect that the bottle had had some of the contents removed by an employee at the store I bought it from and that he/she had then topped it up with water. It's unlikely that the (probably automated) production process had gone wrong without the manufacturer lknowing about it. You could tell it was runny by shaking the bottle, and in future I'm going to shake bottles of thick liquids before I buy them.

I suggest you do the same.

The manufacturer was entirely fair about it by sending me a cheque for the purchase price and the postage I had paid, plus another bottle of the polish.

I wouldn't think so.

I would say that as the manufacturer was quick to cough up with no hastle, they knew they had had a production problem.

Its called customer service. Whether they had a production fault or not they may still have a happy customer and it cost them little in the grand scheme of things.

Well spotted. Any hint as to what kind of establishment you bought it from (chain, independent, supermarket etc)?

...it's called customer service....

Companies need to be careful not to be shafted, because some people try to make a living out of this sort of thing.

The car polish example would be to decant about a third into another container, top-up the original with water and send it off in the almost certain knowledge a little profit would be made.

I made a genuine complaint about a chocolate bar and the manufacturer sent me a cheque for £3.

The bar didn't taste right to me, but I'm sure I would have got the same result if I'd complained about a perfectly good one.

I understand some address sharing goes on in customer service departments in an effort to weed out the serial complainers.

Nationwide chain of large stores which sells car and bicycle related products.
No more hints as to the product or the store!

"customer service"

We bought some CIF so-called oven cleaner recently. Not containing caustic soda (no doubt to appease H&S) it was pretty useless for the task, so I rang their 'customer care' number. They were polite and helpful, and sent a voucher for slightly more than the purchase price, and we have since found that it is pretty good for cleaning alloy wheels and the soot off the windows of our wood-burner. Everything except ovens, really...

I've never had a problem with ersatz runny car polish myself - I've been using the same reputable family run car accessory shop for many years & never had a problem at all.

35yrs ago the lads on a night shift at the local petrol station on the A1 would do their own cars with polish off the shelves and then top up with warm water, shake up a bit and pop back on display.

That is why they invented tamper proof tops! To stop oiks taking a swig from bottles etc. Surely the polish had a tamper proof cap of some sort? the last polish I had was ( is) in a tin and is paste, hard to nick that but I suppose you could put some lard back.
