To scrap or not to scrap? - Campbell
My friend owns a 1996 'P' plate Nissan Micra, which has done just over 100,000 miles. She is thinking of getting rid of it to save money. The car is slightly battered, but has been reliable and it is a fairly high-spec 1.3 GX model with an airbag and power steering.

She rekons no-one will want it and wants to scrap it, but has only been offered £30 for it, is this a realistic scrappage price?
If it is scrappped how much can you realistically strip off the car before it goes? (she has already removed the CD player)

I rekon she should stick it on eBay listing the faults, but i feel a lack of MOT will put buyers off, is this a realistic option?

It's not very heavy but yes try e bay but you won't get a fortune for it or you could break for spares.

i advised a customer to scrap a car i didnt want in part exchange yesterday and he got paid £102 on the bridge so £30 is only applicable if you live in the sticks with transportation to add to the boys with the truck who need wages guv
the micra has two small cats worth at least £15 a piece and batteries "small" at the moment are worth £3 each
bellboy tatters at your service..............

Stunned that a top of the range Micra with PAS is only worth £30 - £100

Is the MOT uneconomical?

it's only a year older than my old girl!

Is it rotten?

If not, and the MOT is going to cost less than £250, get it done.

£30 is derisory. Pretty much the only thing that gets these cars is rust. If this is a rust-free one the engine will probably run for another 100K and with the ticket would make a perfect first car.

£30? Where are you, I'll have it!

A couple of years ago, we were ready to scrap our N reg '95 Fiesta (£35) when folks on here suggested that we try e-bay. We did, and got £155 for it.

Thanks for the replies

I think she is just going to scrap it, she works 6 days a week and doesn't have the time to arrange viewings etc. I asked her about the MOT cost, but she reckons it will cost around £400, which she is unwilling to spend.

She's sad to be bidding farewell to her beloved 'Pollyanna', as the Micra is affectionately known.

Don't believe the adverts you see in the local papers-when you phone them, there's always something else"price of scrap went down this week, guvnor". etc.

If she does scrap it - and you will get more on Ebay I suspect - make sure she delivers it to, or has it collected by a registered disposal site who will issue the appropriate DVLA Certificate of Destruction.
This will ensure the vehicle is properly registered as scrapped at the DVLA.

What you don't want is to phone a mobile number in the free adds and have someone come around and collect the car - bodge it up - and run around in the car picking up parking and speeding fines which will duly arrive in your friends name.

£400 for what? If it really does need £400 spending on it then it must be pretty rotton, have no brakes, no legal tyres etc.

We've had two pages of failures in the past but never had to spend more than £200 getting it through apart from the Escort which we scrapped.

Pretty sure you would get over £200 for it on Ebay. I sold a Fiesta which was rotten and had a 11 previous owners for £250 which had failed the MOT but did have two months ticket left. It was battered, rusty, 13 years old, needed a new clutch etc.

I was honest about the failures.

If she really does love her micra, then warn her that the scrappie may well pick it up by putting a giant spike through the roof!
Better to put it on Freecycle and let someone else, who needs a car, do the work for the MOT

No...i think this is not the realistic price for scapping a car and we can't decide the scrap car value without analyzing it. So better you contact some other car scrap dealer who can give you somewhat more than this.
