Very recently, like yesterday, heard a strange feint whirring/rumbling from, I think, somewhere in the transmission. It is there for a while then disappears. The frequency of the sound is not affected by depressing the clutch and it diminishes with road speed - not engine speed.
Any offers regarding the source and cause? Thanks.

Forgot to say that the engine is diesel....

Could be a wheel bearing, next time you hear it, note whether it is louder cornering in one direction than the other.

Thanks. I tried the cornering procedure to determine wheel bearing or cv joints but it made no difference. Something tells me it is gear box related.

Hi,
It may well be the diff bearings going. I had a similar noise on my previous Pug Diesel which was same year as yours. I had it repaired by a specialist gearbox firm and cost me circa £300. That was 4 years ago..... Apparently its a fairly common failure.
Hope this helps

Mmm ...... It does sound unusual. What you say matches my gut feeling.
Today, other than first thing this morning, it has been quiet. Given that it's a 145000miles old Pug (that has provided me with pleasurable driving for all those miles), something like this does not come as a surprise.
Unless, there are any other suggestions I will sit back and wait for a bit, until it becomes more consistent and irritating before I venture to the local garage.
Thanks for your help

I wouldn't worry about it, on of my XMs makes a noise like a tram at certain speeds but not generally in motorway driving, its done nearly 200,000 miles and I expect it will do at least another 100k.
