Why no junction 3 in M1? - movilogo
How come no Junc 3? J4 after J2 doesn't make sense!

Also, J7 & J8 are same junction! Which I believe was done quite recently.

Isn't Scratchwood services classed as J3?

It does have access to interchange from both North and Southbound carriageways.
Why no junction 3 in M1? - movilogo
Is it same as London Gateway Services? But that's J2.

AFAIK, it's the only service in M1 after Toddington at J12.

"This was meant to be a new dual-carriageway link road to the A1 that never got built for one reason or another. When it was realised that the M1 has quite enough connections to the A1 around here, the site was opened up as a service area and the never-opened junction converted to entrance slip roads.

There was originally intended to be a link road to the A1. I had a map in the late 60s showing this as projected. Presumably at some stage the idea was killed off.

What seems to me a pity is that they never completed the roundabout. Even though the link road will never be built, vehicles entering and leaving Scratchwood Services are faced with sharp bends, which could be alleviated if the remaining bit of the roundabout were built.

Originally this was meant to be a full access junction in the form of a roundabout with a dual carriageway link out to Stirling Corner. This was to reduce the traffic on the A1 by providing access to the M1 and stopping traffic using the A1 between this point and the A406, as this road passes through residential areas."

I expect there are a few missing junctions. Up here we have no Junction 7 on the M61.
There is a service area , Bolton North, between 6 and 8 but it has never had any service access from any road other than the motorway.
I wonder if it's unique in that.

It will always be Scratchwood to me, although it changed it name about ten years ago.

Originally there was to be a full junction here with a link to the A1. Hence the very strange road layout. It was never built.

Junction 2 is A1. Junction 4 is A41.

Full list of junctions here. www.cbrd.co.uk/motorway/m1/exitlist.shtml

Edit - colin beat me to it with a much fuller answer!

There are some strange motorway junctions.

J8/9 of the M4 (the only dual numbered one I think) was a strange redevelopment under which the old piece of road between junctions 8 and 9 became the A404(m), and the M4 was connected between junction 7 and the old junction 9.

The A404(m) has three junctions. One is the intersection with the M4 (J8/9 of the M4), and the other two junctions are called .... J9a and J9b!!!

What about the junctions below M1 junction 1 which were never built?

Conceptually, Junction 7 is the point where the old M10 (now A414) meets the M1 and it is to the south of Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead).

In effect, Junction 7 consists of dedicated lanes on the M1.

What you cannot do is travel north on the M1 and leave at Junction 7 in a south-easterly direction towards St Albans. You must continue to Junction 8, exit the motorway, rejoin it going south and almost immediately take the A414 at "Junction 7".

there is a road link from the M1 to the A1 somewhere between J3 & J2 of the M1 . It is closed off, a kind of cutting, it dips a bit , but it's there nonetheless

There are numerous old disused junctions on the German autobahns. The original junctions were at right angles to the carriageways just as with "normal" roads.

In due course they were replaced with the more modern sliproad style junctions. These old entry and exit roads then went on in many cases to be built on as they provided a ready made infrastructure with drainage and power. Resultantly you see cheaper residential housing built right up to the side of the autobahns often with nothing much more than a high hedge separating the end house from the hard shoulder.

The Germans have a name for these streets which escapes me for now but I suspect someone will know.

The M74 starts in Glasgow at junction 1. It is now being extended through to the other side of Glasgow. I wonder what these junctions will be called?? Or will they rename this stretch a different M number?

Perhaps the person who gave the junctions their number wasn't very numerate. Perhaps they'd lost their pocket calculator, which a lot of people these days seem to need to solve even the simplest of arithmetical problems. J2 + 1 = J4 ?
Why no junction 3 in M1? - pmh3
I would suggest that since ' jx ' conventionally represents an imaginary number that at some point in the complex planning and numbering process an employee suffering from dyscalculia was replaced by a dyslexic mathematician. He decided that the only practical implementation of j3 after the actual existing J2 was to not have one at all. He was then replaced by a less educated plodder who decided that since 3 junctions had already been built/planned that the next junction must be the fourth. Not knowing any better he decided to call it Junction 4 , which then became J4 because the illiterate sign writer could not fit all the letters on the sign.

Simple!
