I recently checked my oil cap and found a white substance on the oil cap, is this a sign of my head gasket going??

Depends. Do you do a lot of short journeys? If so, then chances are the oil isn't getting hot enough to burn off any moisture.

so would it stop it happening if i let the car heat fully before any journey?

No that'll make it worse, you need to welly it down the motorway for 20 mins, get the revs up to the 4500 mark a good few times.

I (well my better half!) have the same car so i know sitting at 70mph on the mway will do the trick revs wise.

Basically, every so often you want to keep the engine as far away from idle speed as possible (i.e. avoiding sitting in traffic, doing short journeys etc.).

I would not worry about this, it is a winter occurrance. You will be lucky to get the car hot enough to get rid of it . I reckon it affects lots of cars , but owners never look at oil filler.
I have it on my Skoda (petrol ) but it is not leaking coolant. A better check for HG is whether the car is using coolant, or putting out a lot of steam from the exhaust.
