I'm thinking of treating myself to a Jimny.
I am being made redundant shortly so I am considering a new model and using part of my package to finance the purchase.
Is paying cash a good option and if so what sort of discount should I be looking for?

wrong time to be buying, what with snow etc forcing some people to buy them as an emergency measure simply to travel about in some parts of the country

if you leave it until weather is more normal you will be back to proper negotiating position

These have started turning my head too. They're pretty nifty!

Not sure about cash discount, a lot of times the special offer rate is now dependant on you taking finance so the vendor collects the commission for selling the finance.

Getting cheap cash insurance plan in your case -->

You can twist a PCP to work for your situation -- in case you hit unforseen issues getting a new job (i sincerely hope not!!) you can twist a PCP to be an insurance policy for you (at a fraction of the cost of an insurance policy designed for this):

Say car costs £17k. You could pay £17k cash today.

Or you could arrange a pcp deal that's all deposit and no monthly payments: you pay £9k cash today and £8k in 2-3 years. You keep that £8k hard earned under the mattress just in case, and if something goes wrong you have a car (with no payments) which can be returned if you need to call on the £8k to survive.

Thanks for the replies guys. Most helpful.

Craigp - I like that idea you suggested in the last paragraph. I dont want monthly payments going out for a few years when the prospects of further employment aint good, hence my idea for buying cash whilst its there

If you're buying new you should also look at the Grand Vitara 3-dr in 1.6, 2.4 and 1.9diesel flavours.

Only the diesel has low ratio gears for serious offroading but the petrol models are not without talent.

Good deals are a bit thin on the ground - might be worth waiting a few months to see if sterling vs Yen improves. Suzuki do some fantastic deals just as a model is about to be replaced... surely it's about time for Jimny to be retired (around for nearly 12 years)?

"Surely" eh! You find a more capable bit of kit for the money and I'll eat me 'at.

As an off-road machine it is superb, no doubt.

Time for a wee bit of an update though - the last significant one was the VVT engine around 2005.

I bet that Vitara 1.6 can slip under the bonnet nicely.... ;-)

A good example of not changing something that does exactly what it needs to with no real rivals.

I like suzukis. good little motors, just be aware that some spares can be fearsomely expensive.
