Theres a loud rattling which is what I presume coming from the exhaust, mostly when idling or at low RPM's, recently the noise has got worse and the exhaust warning light is now on but not flashing, just a solid light. No loss in performance whatsoever, however the noise is becoming louder and more occuring. Anybody got any ideas?

Sounds like the catalytic converter has disintegrated.

Yes, its the cat. Bit unusual at this age, the VW ones usually last well, unless driven through flood water

is this a big/expensive job? Im still driving it out of necessity but trying not to. am i just making it worse?

Well it needs replacing anyway. Looks like the part will cost you £200-300 + labour. Strange for an '04 to already need a new one.
