05 1.4 twinport petrol oil control rings - dayshappy
Hi Anyone ever heard of this?
All 4 oil control rings have just failed literally overnight, car had just been started and only travelled 200 yrds. Never a trace of using oil or burning oil, done 51,000 miles of which we have done 6,000 owned for 10months, 12 months warranty, warranty say wear and tear. We now need a new engine. Anyone heard of this occurring as a result of wear and tear. Vx also say rapid deceleration can cause this ? worrying as we have another Corsa in the family.

Can you not repair the engine you have?

New pistons and rings might require a re bore new bearings for the bottom end etc, rather than a new engine.

This all sounds very strange??? So can you expand on just what happened, to a previously sound engine after a 200 yard run? You might get the odd ring breakage, but all four overnight?

Hi Boggles just that really car was working perfectly normally friday, very cold at the weekend, didn't use car, started monday morning thought a bit more steam than usual + odd smell, drove off down road looked behind couldn't see the road , engine sounded odd stopped car. Towed to Vx they said cat and cylinder head a-wash with oil have seen one piston oil control ring looks gummed up. piston has rub marks on the skirt. Everyone says never seen anything like it, car has full service history. This is a warranty claim but they say its wear and tear. we have only done 6,000 of the 51,000 miles.

Hi Bigtee This is a warranty claim and Vx have done report we asked to car to be put in over Christmas but it was left out with cylinders exposed only covered with cloth and open throttle body, Vx replied that they were going to claim for a new engine so it didn't matter.

Oil control do get gummed up (glued to piston) on gently driven cars. But it doesn't happen suddenly, it takes months to happen and some good high-rev driving or a bit of motorway cruising will free them off.
only time we ever see rings suddently given trouble is after a cambelt snap when we rebuild the head and owner comes back later complaining oil consumption is up. Dont know why this happens, but it does.
Not heard of your sort of problem, sounds more like head gasket gone (lots of white smoke behind?).
