high performance replacement bulbs - paul2007
hello
i bought a used jeep grand Cherokee overland a few months back. its a damn good car but lacks the xeon lights that i have on my merc.

i've looked a 'hid' lights but like the straightforward swap over to phillips extreme 80%= bulbs

the car jeep handbook is not clear and states my dip bulbs are 9006 - some sites show the H4 & others the H11.

my jeep was first registered in march 2009.

there is a distinct lack of jeep forums.

Might just be that your lenses are covered in cigarette smoke ?

Its not difficult to find out what bulbs you have fitted and what you can replace them with !

If unable to open the bonnet etc, you could try shops like Halfords, or even a mechanic at a garage !

I'm not a great fan of these 'high-performance' bulbs.

Quite often headlights are badly-aimed, so the owner fits 'better' bulbs. The result - even more blinding of oncoming traffic.

Keep the light glasses clean, check their alignment, go to Specsavers or - heaven forbid - drive a bit more slowly.

I think your car will have an HB4 bulb in it. The headlights on these cars are poorly designed, so an upgraded bulb will not make a big difference.

The dipped beam(s) on my new KA were beyond dire! Bought 90% extra bulbs at Halfords on a BOGOF and the lights were better, but not much. Went to my local dealer and had the beam height adjusted. It turned out they had come out of the factory set too low. A great result for £20; I can't comment on the longevity of the bulbs as they have only been in a month but I found it a worthwhile change!

I can't believe they supplied you with a new car with maladjusted lights, then charged you £20 to set them properly?

Apart from my early motoring days 35+ years ago, I've never had a car with headlights that were so poor as to be a concern.

There's no denying that HIDs are vastly superior for the user, but I think they should be banned - they're just an arms race and when everybody has them we'll all be more dazzled by oncoming traffic than we were before.

Incidentally, I got some "+20%" H1 lamps for £3.99 a pair from LIDL a few weeks ago; Tesla branded I think. The one I have used is quite a bit brighter than the one it replaced, so no need to spend a fortune.

Thank you all bar YB.

They are indeed H4 aka 9006 according to my handbook for the jeep.

I too hate being dazzled by those ill fitted bulbs/hids/etc. I will make sure my lights are road legal.

Btw way just had a look under the bonnet, not that easy to replace bulbs.

Thank you & will order via website.

I bought a new KA and the headlights were set wrongly-one up and one down.Dealer reset them for free.Should have been picked up on PDI.

No the bulbs were £20, for 2. The adjustment was £8.50 and charged because I didn't go to the supplying dealer, I suppose.

Its ok, I dont expect (or want ) to win popularity contests; especially those run by people who want to slap somebody for being less important and daring to smoke, and then throw the butt.

What on earth would you do if somebody scratched your lump of metal; oops I mean precious car?

As to why you got upset for my practical advice given in reply to your post i still dont understand. Maybe you are just a violent person!

You may find this article useful in choosing new bulbs :

However I just plumped for a standard Lucas from my local factors when one of mine blew recently.

I purchased the Philips X-treme Power for my Leon. I was about to purchase the HID kit, but then realised how blinding they are on the receiving side, along with yet more money to feed the insurance company.

They do make a heck of an improvement, but they're expensive! Lasted a year so far. Recommended if you can foot the amount. Otherwise, consider a HID kit and get it aligned.

I just changed the H4's on the lancer for Osram +80% nightbreakers. Its a worthwhile upgrade and is as good as the H7's on the Altea.

So the OP has a big rant about how dangerous and anti social smoking in cars is and then goes to ask for advice about high output light bulbs. Theres a good reason why headlight alignment is part of the MOT and why there is a maximum wattage for headlights.

Higher output lightbulbs are dangerous and anti social, they dazzle oncoming cars way too much. If you are having trouble seeing the road ahead then try slowing down a bit?

I think for some reason the OP is on a trolling mission and seems out to wind people up. Or maybe hes got the hump because santa didnt bring him any presents? Ok, I'm not going to feed the troll any more, off to watch some telly - remake of day of the triffids is on later, might be worth a look.

My improved lights are 100% legal (IN WATTAGE AND BEAM) and because i can see better much safer.

These new high output bulbs are specifically designed to circumvent the law. The law when put in place was intended to control the amount of light put out by headlights - limiting the wattage was an easy way to do it.

If brighter bulbs are safer then why are higher wattage bulbs illegal? By your arguement we should be allowed to fit the highest wattage bulb that cars electrics can handle.

they pass the mot. The law was designed when poor light optics meant scattered beams.

Ah, Moonshine, you forgot - 'high-performance' drivers need 'high-performance' headlight bulbs!

Is that better? I blame HJs forum for not stripping out the {P} when you delete your profile :)

Most (not all I agree) lighting problems are aim rather than product problems!

As many have said, brighter lights = more glare for others !

Now that is a problem I consider needs tackling by the police (but accept they are busy rounding up all the smokers to get them banned first!)
