Wonder if they'll ever make a comeback.
My old boss had one on his mustard yellow Marina in the seventies :-)
Loking back now I think................Why?

having owned a marina (1.8tc) , they were fitted to cover the dents!

On my one and only trip to Knowsley Safari Park in the seventies I saw some baboons strip the vinyl roof off the car in front in seconds.
Animal behaviourologists are still split over whether the inmates learnt this ability to strip goods from vehicles from the locals or the other way round.

Down at the SeaLife Centre there were:
1. a shark
and
2. a lobster
and
3. a crab
and
4. a Scouser
Right, which was the odd one out & why?

As well as being glued to the roof using adhesive, weren't they retained front and rear by the windscreen/rear windows rubber seals being fitted over the edge of the vinyl and within the roof gutters by chrome gutter strips? Wouldn't be easy in todays cars, which largely have bonded screens and no roof gutters.

depends if it was a factory fit vinyl roof Auristocrat or a bodge job to hide a rolled car or a bodged cutnshut

I thought Vinyl Roofs looked grrrrrrrrreat and improved many a car, like dis one ~

Wasn't it the Humber Imperial that brought the then American fashion for vinyl roofs over to Britain? Except that its roof was actually covered with real leather, not vinyl, at least on early models.
I think the only benefit that vinyl roofs brought was that they broke up the shape of the car, making it look more interesting and expensive.
Going back to that other thread on two-tone paintwork, I think giving cars a contrasting shiny black painted roof would have looked better than vinyl.
In the 1920's and 1930's, some bodybuilders offered lighteight bodies on luxury chassis which were covered in fabric or leathercloth ( an predecessor of vinyl), giving the car body a slightly padded, or quilted look. Weymann was one coachbuilder who popularised this construction method - where the fabric replaced metal panelling, so the car body was effectively a glorified frame tent!

My 1929 Riley 9 Monaco has a fabric body: in surprisingly good condition..

I remember my Dad buying a metallic chocolate brown Escort GL in '77 or '78, and having the dealer fit a nice beige/cream vinyl roof :-) Don't see that colour combo much these days.
The replacement Escort in '81 was pale blue with a black vinyl roof. Still looked good on that model Escort imho...
Weren't vinyl roofs standard kit on Ghia spec Fords, so they made lesser Fords look posher if they were fitted?!

And here's possibly one of the most ridiculous cars ever marketed - the MOHS Safarikar - completely covered in padded vinyl or leather.

That is a stunner, perro. In fact I would be hard pushed to think of a modern bloated barge that would even come close.

But is it the colour Robin R - jcoventry's 3 ltr coupe should be more of a looker than a 4 door saloon?

If you've ever read Tom Sharpe's 'Wilt' trilogy, cracking good humourous reads by the way particularly The Wilt Alternative, you will remember the police inspector (name escapes me) describing Wilt's car colour over the radio as being 'pale dog turd'.
That has stayed in my mind for many years and i couldn't bring meself again.
having said that some browns were good colours and it's coming back, sorry about remembering that..;)
|
Metallic brown looked OK on a '77 Escort, honest ;-) But the colour did seem to die out quite quickly in the 80s.
Mind you, I've seen launch snaps of the new BMW X1 last month in a very interesting bronzy turd colour... hmmm.
|
|
My Mk II Escort was not metallic brown it was "Roman Bronze".
Well to be honest, Roman Bronze and Rusty Rust!

I dont think this idea made it this side of the Atlantic did it?
Plymouth "Mod Top" floral print vinyl roof, available in '69-70. Erm, groovy?.

Memory's letting me down now - what was the last car offered for sale in the UK with a vinyl roof as standard, or factory fit extra? Did vinyl roofs die out when a particular car was phased out, or was it during the lifetime of a model? Did strange offers of optional extras (no cost option EITHER vinyl roof OR push button radio) lead to the eventual demise?
Where did all the vinyl roofs go??
|
You want vinyl ( or rexine ) ?
We got it....everywhere.....Granadas ?...pah !

I had a Ford Capri MK11 i think it was. Dark brown body and the vinyl roof was a light brown. Pretty sure this car was made in Germany. It looked great and was a great car many happy miles of motoring. Wish i still had it.
|
Yes there's a Capri just like that near where I live. Brown vinyl roof, with a sun roof - both rare and expensive options I believe. The gold paintwork with brown roof looks really nice IMO.

Velorex 'cars' are a thing of beauty. If I won the lottery I'd have one for when I was feeling in a contrary mood and needed to pop to the shops.

Used to be very common in the 70's on ex-Police Triumph 2.5 PIs. They were used to cover over holes drilled in the roof of a vehicle where the police aerials etc had been.
|
I rather got the impression that cars with vinyl roofs were the automotive eqivalent of mock Tudor houses.
|
Amusing point Chris. It is though mildly fascinating to ponder on which visual cues are or have been construed to confer various levels of perceived status upon cars. Be it brand or sub brand badges, trim levels, wheel size/style, the characters on number plates or indeed vinyl roofs......whatever.
Little sociological signals which have ironically always been far more significant to the signaler than to the signalee.
