extended warranties - paul2007
Hello all
test driving my new laptop - lol.
re extended warranties. my mercedes s600 MB warranty expires in Aptil 2010 & jeep hemi goes in july.
had quotes from warrantydirect - 950 for merc & 1400 for jeep - their top fligh cover with franchised dealer reapirs for parts 7 labour quotes appear to be too good to be true. Especially when other warravty sites charge a lot more.
anyone tried WD?
cheers

Yep, and had to claim off them a couple of times, they were ok.

One comment I would make, though, is that like most insurance I ended up paying far more out on the warranties than I made in claims...

I've often thought that it may be better to put the money away each year in a savings account that I would have spent on the warranty, then I'd have some money there to pay the bill if it came, or some money there to go towards a new car if it didn't...

Its a gamble either way!

Its a gamble either way!

...or it depends how much you value the peace of mind.

In some ways extended warranties, like all insurance other than that required by law, is for "poor" people. If a big repair bill would find you in some difficulty, then buy the warranty. I would venture to suggest that someone with a Merc S600 and Jeep Hemi could probabaly afford to take the gamble!

In that case then, I have to consider myself as poor :-(

My extended manufacturers warranty cost just over 300 pounds per year. In three years it will have done over 100k miles and be ready for scrapping.

So for around a grand I will have peace if mind if the turbo goes (or "when" judging by what HJ has to say about the car in the CBC!)

It is a gamble, like most insurance, though unlike some its not compulsary.

The problem is that most car warranties are not very comprehensive, and just like Manufacturer's warranties they will look for get-outs. You will get for what you pay for, by restricing what is covered you can reduce the price, but that inevitably menas some things aren't covered...

Looking back, on my old Fabia and the Corsa I'd have been better off saving the money... but you never know!

"Its a gamble either way"

Not for the Insurance company behind the warranty it isn't. Warranty cover is enormously profitable business. On average for every £100 in premiums they collect they pay around £30 in claims Only take out an extended warranty if you really, really cannot afford an unforeseen bill. Arguably if you can't of course you should not be running a car.

If your turbo goes, it would not surprise me if the warranty company knocks back a claim, citing "wear and tear".

A wonderful catch all statement.

It would be interesting to know how many claims on these policies have been denied when a really expensive claim was made.

That really would make interesting reading and i doubt we'll ever see the figures, never personally known anyone to have any good results with such things.
My neighbour found out his warranty covered about 250 of a 1600 nicka auto gearbox rebuild on an Audi...thats many years ago though.

Warranty direct make allowances for 'wear & tear'! Hence my thread asking about WD's cover.

a supercharger went on my relatives S class - replacement & couple of trip extra to sort out minor mishaps with same cost 1400.

I think we will go for the.

Jeep extension which runs out next year.

I would be gobsmacked if a £300/yr policy will pay the full cost of a turbo in a (say) 80K mile car.

I wouldn't. It's a manufacturers warranty, on a car which has FSH from the dealer that I bought it from.
Every time I ask them to do anything to the car they bend over backwards to do it ASAP, and they never charge me. Without doubt this dealership is easily the best that I've ever used (and without naming names, HJ gives them a good mention elsewhere on the site)

I feel a bit of a rat that I won't be buying my next car from them - nor any other BMW dealer to be fair.

For £300 you must have the most basic drivetrain cover, with a chunky excess?

Must admit that I didn't think even that policy was as cheap as that.

I have Maximum Cover ("Comprehensive"). The annual fee is actually 330 pounds (original quote was 380).
I can have this cover up to 100,000 miles. After that, I would only be allowed Drive Train Cover. However, I will have got rid of it by then and bought an Audi or some other FWD vehicle.

I'm absolutely astonished the full BMW warranty is that cheap. If you buy another make and are thinking of doing the same thing then you might want to check the price first, they're usually way more expensive than that.

AFAIK, this site allows you to name good garages. It is "naming and shaming" that is verboten.

So won't you please do your fellow backroomers/motorists a favour and tell us the name of this dealership?

As a general rule of thumb, extended warranties are a way of supporting insurance companies, as a kind of charity. Unless your vehicle (computer, washing machine, ..) shows signs of being much more than averagely unreliable, don't bother.

I looked at this a while back and found that WarrantyWise was a better deal at the time, but it's good while back, if they are still in business at all.......I have no connection with them.

Just looked up WarrantyWise. Yes they are in business.
