Interesting thread about what BRs carry in the car, but is there any bit of kit which you have made or adapted for a special purpose and which, perhaps, would be a mystery to anybody finding it
I have one here...
tinyurl.com/yg6zrzs
It could do with a repaint after ten years or so of use. The other end of the tube is open and it's about 6 inches long
Any ideas ?

Is it some sort of tow-hitch for hoiking stuff about?
|
|
My first attempt at a guess is that the tube is to put a flagpole in but I can't work out where on the car you attach it.
|
So far..........cold !
Ted

|
Flagpole made me think "Ham radio antenna mounting".
|
Looks like it attaches to the car and then used to leaver something? Haven't got a clue what though!
|
Izzit a tool for adding leverage to sumfink Teddy?
|
OK. Second guess. Something to do with the caravan. "3ft wrecking bar" goes into the tube.
|
Sorry...no one near yet......might run 'til New Year but it is exclusive for car and made by me.
Ted
|
Is it a home-made security device Teddy?
|
Handbrake-gearknobby type thing then ?
|
Put through steering wheel with a large lock?
|
Have to give in, you're both too close !
Select reverse gear. Sealed tube fits over column change gear lever...stops end button being pushed in. Two bars go either side of steering wheel rim and a long padlock goes through the holes.
Ted
|
And what are you driving with a column change gear lever ? Haven't seen one of those since a Saab 96 V4........

Your steering / gear lock is a good deterrent, rotor arm in pocket is a good immobiliser.
|
I have a master cut-off switch under the seat as well.
I made this before the disclok came out but I think the steering wheel is too big anyway.
The battery's under the back seat so hot wiring with the power shut down would be hard !
Take it on a transporter, ? It's insured for a fixed amount...I could easily buy a better one for that !

My Westfield....(did I ever mention I had a Westfield ?) well anyway, my Westfield had a removable steering wheel. I did sometimes feel a bit stupid with it in pubs / cafes and so on. Always felt as if people were wondering who the nutter with the steering wheel was....

>>I did sometimes feel a bit stupid with it in pubs/ cafes and so on. Always felt as if people were wondering who the nutter with the steering wheel was....
Sounds like a script from a sitcom... driver staggers into a pub clutching steering wheel, hair all over the place, clothes torn.... I'll leave it to someone else to carry it on...!
|

Or put it down his trousers and said 'I've got this steering wheel stuck in my pants and it's driving me nuts'.
|
The 96 (column change) and 99 (floor change) both required you to put it into reverse (and locked it into reverse) before you could take the ignition key out. Do the modern Saabs still do this ???
|
>>> Select reverse gear. Sealed tube fits over column change gear lever... <<<
Pure Genius! I'd never have thought of that Teddy :)
|
I thank you for that Perro...I abase myself before your admiration !
( Sounds good, not sure of meaning, if any )
I used to take the steering wheel off my Mk 2 Fiesta and up to the office when i did the night shift.....titters of amusement from other staff !..Never got nicked though.

Ha! Mr Bean used to remove his mini`s steering wheel, but he went to the extreme!! by fitting bolts/Hasps and padlocks to the doors as well. Thieves had nooo chance ;-)

the car? or the steering wheel?
Some of the blokes at work here would reckon it a hoot to "steal" the steering wheel during working hours.

Hehe! Reminds me of the times when various quite essential parts of cars have come orf whilst I was driving them (1) was the handbrake on a Mk2 Cortina and (2) was the steering wheel of a car when I was trying to centralise it and was driving with the nut in my pocket, so yes - 2 nuts!

Gear lever out of a wee Bedford van oh about 1979.
Shot into the shed, bit too far forward, smartly selected reverse, and the gear stick came out as clean as you like. I got it screwed in again before Dad found out

>>> Gear lever out of a wee Bedford van oh about 1979 <<<
Ah! you've just jogged my memory (blimmin Oldtimers disease!) it was the gearstick that came orf in my Cortina - back in about 78 :)

All I'm getting is a picture of a steam train :-(
|
Sorry about that FC..It seems that if I delete a pic off PBucket, then it takes it off the post and replaces it with the new PBucket picture being put on.
I think the answer is to load pictures in different folders on Photobucket.
No point in putting the original picture back here but, if anyone fancies, the train is the subject of a little quiz I posted on another forum. Bit like Mystery Cars.
It's heading out of London but where to and why ? Unusual makeup, 2 small coaches, a van, 3 more coaches and a last van. It's really ' motoring ' down the main line ( forum link ).....tenuous.

Looks like Great Eastern stock so we'll start the journey at Liverpool Street.
Unusual headlamp code. I was going to say "royal train" but I wouldn't have thought Their Majesties would put up with GER suburban stock!
Some sort of special I'd guess, perhaps the carriages are for an armed escort? Bullion?
|
Not even close...I'll let it run for a bit, the other forum is baffled as well...see who wins !
It is a regular working....but very special !
Interesting and logical attempt though, HM.

Did it involve the rear portion of the train being slipped, leaving just the two coaches and the van?
|
No, but a good thought.
More ...it's heading south from London towards the coast. It will end travelling up a short branch.
Ted
|
Very intriguing. I've been looking at my "Pre-Grouping Atlas and Gazeteer".
It could be something that splits, involving part of the train going off to Hayling Island, or to Portsmouth/Portsmouth harbour. (But I'd expect more coaches for the latter).
|
I wonder if the passenger coaches are a red herring?
Does it by any chance involve explosives?
|
Is it carrying Prisoner's Teddy?
|
Very logical thoughts from all of you.....LDO is on the right lines...pun intended.
This ones not going to go off with a bang though ! The branch line is only about 400 yds long but has 2 stations and a level crossing. It looks a jolly day out, wouldn't you like to be on it ?
I'll run it 'til tonight unless it's solved...with the mod's consent ?
Ted
Edit...Considering HM's last post further...that's a very good attempt,,,old coaches used as buffer wagons between the loco and the 2 explosives vans...very good !
But totally wrong.

Well untill your last statement, I was going to say this was the necropolis special, from waterloo to brookwood.
|
AE, you've beaten me.
It's the regular run from it's terminus, not officially Waterloo, but ' London Necropolis '
The train runs down the LSWR main line as far as Brookwood Station where it reverses into the Necropolis branch into the cemetery, the biggest in Britain.
There are two stations, with catering and waiting room facilities and it crosses the main road, Cemetery Pales, with the aid of a flagman. The stations are for the Church of England clients and the Non-conformists, as are the two parts of the train
When ADO said the Portsmouth line, he was right ,
The photo shows the train passing Wimbledon on June 25th 1902.
The service ended when London Necropolis station was bombed in WW2. Funerals went from Waterloo by ordinary train after that.
The company owned the coaches and hearse van but the main line railway supplied the motive power.
Good game, good game !

Very interesting Teddy & AE - I used to live near there as a kyd and was always knocking around the Station (up to no good!)
I've checked it out on Wiki - some famous peps buried there inc. King Edward (The Martyr)
