throttle valve adaptation spring test fail - issieman
Hi All,

My 2003 3I8ISE car went into limp mode showing EML DSC, BRAKE lights. When I restarted the car It would not to idle ok, it revs itself. I used an OBDII reader and got the following:

P1634 :Throttle Valve Adaptation; Spring Test Failed

what's involved

Am scared of being ripped off.

Thanks
Issie

err with caution, it could be a throttle body fault but could also be a crankcase ventalation valve diaphram failed causing the hunting which is putting the throttle body out of parameters!
Crank case breathers are a common cause of faults on the 318.

There is a simple method of establishing if the valve has failed but its messy & requires caution. When hot, remove the oil filler cap whilst ticking over & place a piece of paper over the cam cover. oil filler hole" watch out for the revolving fan" if it sucks the paper to the oil filler cap hole the diapram has failed. its about £45.00
If the paper is blown away & doesn't hover over the oil filler cap hole the breather should be ok. Don't forget its messy or get it checked at a good indy or bMW specialist

Thanks very much,
right now I can't even move the the car, the accelerator is not reponding so might have to get it thowed to the specialist.

In the mean time will try the CrankCase test.

Hi issieman, if the throttle doesn't respond it sounds like a throttle body issue

the cranck case test passed ..
the car now sounds ok though.. no idle problems no EML lights

I did another read out and it showed
P0121 TPS/Pedal Position Sensor A CKT Range/Perf

P0120 TPS/Pedal Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

It all seems to be pointing at the Throttle -ish
