DMF TDCi 130 ... Warning Signs ??? - niceguyeddy
Hi ..... can any of the resident experts let me know how (if possible) you can tell a car has a DMF that is on the way out?

Also anyone know how much you are talking to get one fixed if it self destructs ?

there will be a lot of vibration and rattling, not from the engine but from your nerves when you get a repair quote for £1000 + for a new flywheel

The starter motor often gets stuck and won't turn the engine. This is due to it being clogged with the material from the breaking up DMF!

The starter issue as described above (it gets clogged with swarf from the disintegrating DMF and can get stuck) is one tell-tale.

One other is a loud clatter and vibration (on top of the usual diesel noises) at idle. This will usually disappear when the clutch is pressed. This gets progressively worse.

Another is a squeal from the clutch/DMF when the clutch is released under load - i.e. if you use it to engine brake and are not careful to match the engine speed to road speed etc.

If you are having it replaced at an indy you are looking ar anywhere between £650 and £800 depending on whether you need a new starter or not. At a main dealer you're looking at > £1000. ::: gulp :::

The items usually replaced are the clutch, the DMF and the concentric slave cylinder and/or release bearing. The starter can sometimes be salvaged by cleaning/blowing the swarf out if it isn't too contaminated.

I need to do this on my mk3 (2004MY) TDCI 130 which has done just over 125k - which seems quite a common age/mileage for this to happen.

We change a fair few of these. By the time the starter is choked with swarf things are pretty far gone.
bacially ANY clonk/lnocking/rattle from the flywheel area is a sign the DMF is on its way out. In my experience the very FIRST signs of DMF wear are a knock or clonk from the flywheel area as the motor is switched off.

Thanks - can you please confirm which components you would recommend replacing? Just want to make sure I have got them all covered.

TIA.

You need a full clutch kit, DMF assy and slave cylinder. Clean all the swarf out of the bellhousing.
If the starter is still servicable it does not have to be replaced. The starter can always be replaced at a later time should it start to play up, its not difficult to get at. We always use all new bolts on the flywheel assy.

Moving it over to Tech soon.

My friendly VW tech tells me an early sign on the VW engines (presume applies to all though) is what seems like a slight, irregular misfire at idle. The engine is not misfiring of course, but is thrown slightly out of balance by the loss of material from the flywheel.

He also warned me the VW ones often explode when they finally fail, sometimes taking the bellhousing with them. What a stunning piece of engineering.

I own a DMF equipped VW by the way :-(

Cheers

Any of em can fly apart, but you would have good warning and have to ignore a lot of noises for it to reach that stage. We have had a couple that have come apart, but no wrecked bell housings as yet.

Cheers, EU, for ruining a great concept - the diesel engine.

We always use all new bolts on the flywheel assy.

>>>>>>> why is that workshop tech?
is it your belt and braces approach or is it due to having had them sheared?
thanks :-)

Would I be right in saying that automatics aren't fitted with DMFs? Do they have similar problems you'd associate with the manuals being discussed here?

Wonder if this is what is happening to my Cmax 2.0 tdci.
Its lumpy on tick over and seems ruff when cold. And we have had a funny intermittant vibration on the clutch pedal , which has gone now. I have had it into the local garage for a new turbo recently as that failed and also i have also spent alittle extra having the injecters checked and the fuel system. The diesel specialist could find nothing wrong here and his last diagnosis was prop a bent con rod or sticking valve. But a common comment from a few mechanics that have looked over it is they say it runs all out of ballance somehow!! . But after all this the car is still awkward to start and ticks over lumpy.
maybe the flywheel is breaking up!!
