It has been a long time, maybe 7 to 10 years, som that's between 280,000 and 400,000 miles ago.
I've worn out a lot of tyres in that time however...
|
Last year, I had two punctured tyres at the same time. One front had a self tapper in it and one rear had a nail in it.My car was one of five that week that picked up punctures almost certainly caused by contractors(vans) spilling various nuts bolts and screws across the work car park. I have picked up in our car park in one week the equivalent of a bagfull of screws. Now after numerous complaints and claims for replacement tyres, the car park is swept every fortnight.
I believe the AA say that the average motorist will get a puncture every 90,000 miles.I think that I have had around six or seven punctures in thirty years of driving, so I have had slightly more than average.

My current set of tyres, which just about a legal thread and to be changed very soon has remained puncture free.
The most annoying puncture I got was when doing some DIY in the garage, putting the car in afterwards and next day realising that I drove over one nail I dropped myself. And obviously to change it I had to drive the car+flat tyre first out of the garage, grrrrr..

Around 1985 IIRC, in a Citroen CX safari estate.

I was thinking this as I sat in Motorpoint last Saturday and was reading the offers on wall posters as the salesman searched his PC for our ideal car.
They promote a *Cobalt* warranty pack discounted from £1299 to £750 which has 3yr tyre damage/puncture cover as one of the benefits. As a stand-alone this cover is listed at £235.
I pondered on the fact that £235 would buy 4 decent tyres for the vehicle we were looking at..... to store in the garage and then use once the original ones wore out.
A claim on the puncture/damage cover seemed unlikely as I reckon SWMBO's car has not suffered for well over 10yrs and mine similarly if I exclude two off-road related damages from when we had to use a 1 mile rough track every day.
Now if we were talking wheelbarrow tyres that's a completely different matter!

5 years ago - bought 2 new tyres - within 1 week 3 punctures in the band new tyres - all changed @ the roadside but a dog to do in the wet of November - nails and screws.
The local tyre man was thinking of giving me my initials on a parking bay!
|
Two summers ago I got a bent knife in the rear NS tyre - obviously left in the road by some crook. 9 months before that a blow-out on the M25 - tyre completely shredded by the time I stopped, so no idea what caused it.
Both in fairly new tyres. Of course. Expensive things as a distress purchase sadly.

In a lorry; regular occupational hazard because I deliver to farms.
Car; Mrs. H's Punto had a persistent slow puncture which needed topping up once a fortnight, but we solved the problem by scrapping the car. ;-)
Bike; the most recent will be with me a long time yet, New Year's Day 2005, coming back from my annual meet-up with the local VMCC section. Front end blow-out at 50 mph on a 1972 Harley Sportster, best laxative known to man! Luckily due to low traffic volumes I managed to keep the bike upright till I was nearly stationary; not an experience I'd care to repeat in a hurry.

My last and only puncture was in around 2002/2003 after coming back from Brittany. So drove to/from Brittany and when I went out the next day there was a flat on the front. Lucky it didn't become a blow out at speed driving from Plymouth to the North West!
Fleet company tried to replace only one but when I pointed out (a) other front tyre very low in tread, (b) it was directional so no use as the spear.... I got two new front tyres at home.

I often pick up screws and nails I see lying in the road.

As in, if I see a screw or nail lying in the road, I will often pick it up with my fingers and put it in a bin.

Same here, or heave it into the hedge.
The worst place I know to see sharp things, mainly pozi screws, os on the ground at the local tip.
