06 1.8 Clunking wipers and mistin windows - ajf
1.8sri (140bhp) auto astra with a/c
During colder wet and damp weather the front windscreen refuses to completely demist. There is always a 1 to 2 inch strip along the bottom edge that stays. The rear side windows also are very slow to clear. Normal or points to clogged drain hole or heater problem?
Recirc is not used and a/c only enough to keep it in use.

Front wipers make a clunk or twang type noise when returning to park position just after they pass vertical.
Sounds like a spring or similar catching. Any ideas?

Car has been booked in for a check but would be helpful to know in advance of any potential problems.

Thanks.

Re: misted windows - when was the pollen filter last changed, if at all?

Probably never.
Car has done 25000 miles and I have not changed it. it had done 8500 when I had it.
Is this a DIY job?

It's basically the same as the Astra-G, according to the above link, so here's a how2 for the Astra-G. Couldn't find one for the H.

Thanks!
Might give this a go at the weekend for the cost of the filter - I am sure the dealer will charge more than £10!

Think I still need to get the wipers checked - don't fancy them suddenly stopping at the moment. lol

I am on my 2nd Astra and I've had the exact same problem with both. A mechanic friend of mine says that it is nothing to worry about and is just the characteristics of the car. My current car has done 76k and the wipers haven't failed. I do get the occassional squeak and I do find that spraying WD40 in the motor arms inside the engine does quiet them down for a while.

A couple of my friends are also Astra owners and have complained about the condensation. One of them is a 59 plate and he is constanly running around with air con on to stop it steaming up. I'm not sure that it is a pollen filter problem and if it is why has a new car got a blocked filter. I think it is more to do with a moister problem within the air con.
